Christmas Survey

I did this survey back in 2005, but decided to do it again when I saw someone else post it. Click here to see how my answers have changed over the years.

1. Eggnog or hot chocolate? I’ve never tried eggnog. Maybe I’ll do that this year. There’s just something about it that sounds and/or looks so unappealing. Hot coco, although, I’m not big on hot drinks, anyway.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just set them under the tree? Wrapped, sometimes he may bring one thing that’s not wrapped.

3. Colored lights or white? Combination of both

4. Do you hang mistletoe? No, but that would be fun.

5. When do you decorate for Christmas? When we have time. Either the 1st or 2nd weekend in December. This year I was ready the day after Thanksgiving, but the stuff wasn’t pulled down from the attic…and it’s still not pulled down, so nothing has been done. (FYI: I can’t pull the stuff down. That’s Rob and Teenager’s job.)

6. What is your favorite holiday dish, excluding dessert? I love our tradition that Rob and I started. Homemade pasta. 🙂 Love the smell of the sauce cooking all day long.

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? I have so many great memories, because my Granddad was such a sucker when it came to Christmas. He loved it! I think one of my fav memories was in December, before school got out for the holiday break, Santa would come visit during the day and drop off wrapped gifts under the tree. Yah, Santa liked me so much he visited early. haha

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? What do you mean? I’ve always known the truth. Santa is real!

9. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? White and colored lights. A hodge-podge of ornaments from my youth, my kids, ornaments from my Grandparents had on our tree, no rhyme or reason to any of it. Last year someone gave us a fake tree that is now our Auburn Tree, which has orange, blue, and white lights, with orange and blue ornaments along with all of our Auburn ornaments.

10. Snow. Love it or hate it? Love it!

11. Can you ice skate? Heck, no!

12. Do you remember your favorite gift? I have so many memories of great gifts. I’ll never forget the year, my grandparents spent endless hours looking for each of the Care Bears, the little plastic ones with moving arms and legs. I thought it was so awesome that I got every single one of them. In those days you couldn’t buy something like that in a premade set.

13. What is the most important thing about the holidays to you? I love it all. I love preparing good food, having beautiful decorations, nice presents for everyone, happy children.

14. What is your favorite holiday dessert? Granny’s fudge

15. What is your favorite holiday tradition? The tradition that I have with my family now is going to the Christmas tree farm and riding on the hay ride to go pick out and cut down our tree. The sad thing is, is that places around here aren’t growing the Virginia Pines much anymore, so we may not be doing that tradition any more.

16. What tops your tree? Either a flickering star or an doll Angel

17. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? I love giving. I put lots of thought into what everyone gets and it’s fun finding the perfect gift.

18. What is your favorite Christmas song? Carol of the Bells by Trans Siberian Orchestra (saw them in concert last weekend!)

19. Candy canes. Yuck or yum? Yum, when I’m in the mood. Although, these days there’s all different flavors, not just peppermint, which makes them even more fun.

Concert!

Last night Rob, Drew, and I had a date night in Atlanta to see Tran-Siberian Orchestra. If you’ve never heard of them, you actually probably have heard a song or two of theirs, but don’t let the name fool you. They are not an orchestra, but an amazingly talented rock band that utilizes strings, polished vocal talent, and narration, along with a spectacular laser and pyrotechnics show.

It was an amazing show, one of the best all-around performances I’ve ever seen. Great quality, sounds, lights, and pyro. See the Setlist here.

Fill in the Blank Friday 12.2.11

The holiday season is my favorite time of year. I love soaking up all that the Christmas season has to offer, from the smells, the decorations, the food, Christmas movies, cooking for the occasion. There’s not much that I don’t like about the Christmas season.

Snow makes me excited. Living in the South, we don’t see snow much. When we do, I enjoy staying home from school/work. Playing in the snow with the kids. Watching the kids slide down the hill across the street. Great fun!

The best comfort food to eat when it’s cold out is either chili or some type of soup.

Winter is the best time for enjoying sitting in the living room with the lights turned low and the fire roaring.

I can hardly wait for Christmas. This year when not hosting, which makes me a little sad, but we’ve hosted for the last 4 years, since we’ve lived in the house. This year we’ll open presents at home, enjoy breakfast, and some alone family time, and then we’ll head up to Rob’s mom’s for the rest of the day.

When it comes to holiday gifts I prefer to give. Give is as much fun as receiving. This year our extended family that we’re meeting up with on Christmas is doing a gift swap. I was in charge of organizing it and sending out the names of who was buying for who. It was fun! I love doing stuff like that.

If I were to rate my excitement about the holiday season on a scale from 1-10, I would say I am at about a 10, which I probably get from my Granddad, because he adored Christmas time and so do I. It never gets old.

Friday Finds

Today I’m starting a new series called “Friday Finds.” This is just going to be a collection of things that I find that week, from new blogs, to stuff on pinterest, or who knows…

So this week I found:

Lil Boo Blue Blog by Ashley
I adore this blog and it’s writer, Ashley. Ashley is an incredibly creative, sweet mom, who recently lost her Dad unexpectedly and now herself is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. Her life moto after her father passing away became Choose Joy, which I think is awesome. I think that’s a motto we should all go by. Life could always be worse. She owns an online shop called Lil Boo Blue where she makes the cutest outfits, doll clothes, patterns, tees… all super adorable. Some of my favorite posts vary greatly in topic, but like my blog I love randomness. 🙂

Recycled Mosaic Kitchen Art – I so want to do this!
Anyway, if you want a new blog to read this one is a must!

I mean really. What a gorgeous family!

Here’s some fun pinterest stuff I found:

CRAFT: I’ve tried to do make cool snowflakes with a coffee filter, but they always turn out looking stupid. I’m for sure going to try this!

Thanksgiving Week

Well, I survived the Thanksgiving week. I was supposed to work 9-6 Monday and Tuesday. Saturday night, I felt drainage down in my throat, so I went to look for some cold meds, but we didn’t have exactly what I needed. I just went to bed without taking anything. Needless to say, I woke up Sunday with a sore throat. Monday, I woke up not feeling any better. In fact, I was having a hard time hacking my stuff up. I stopped by Walgreens for some Mucinex and headed on to work. Everyone was asking me what was wrong. “You’re looking pale and quite droopy.” Wow, ok. “I don’t feel that bad,” I thought. But as the day went on I was feeling worse. Before leaving for lunch, I told my boss I just wasn’t feeling great, so I would stay home to try and shake it. That night I hardly slept, so Tuesday after getting the kids off to school, I went to the doc in a box. After describing my symptoms, they swabbed my throat, nose, and pricked my finger for the flu test. The dr. came in and looked at my throat and ears, telling me they all looked pretty swollen. My lungs sounded rough. Few minutes later, he comes back in to tell me the flu test was positive. Flu + bronchitis = fun, right?

So I went to the pharmacy, got my meds, and went home to rest. Luckily, Rob took off Wednesday to hang out with me and the kids. He also ran to the store to finish getting the food for Thanksgiving. By afternoon, I had a little bit of energy, enough to get up and make my side dishes for the next day. We injected the turkey and then the boys and Rob went to watch the AU women’s basketball game. I enjoyed peace and quiet.

Thursday we got up and watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and wait for Maria and kids to get there. We put the turkey on to cook and then, realized it was going to be 3 hours before the turkey would be done in the infrared cooker. I panicked, being that I was hungry, and thinking that we’d be eating in an hour or so. I whipped out some Mini-sausage pies and fruit salad.

For our early dinner, we had:
– cajun turkey
praline sweet potatoes
– squash casserole
apple corn dressing
– gravy

Maria made the pies and apple sauce. 🙂

Didn’t take any pictures of the food.

But, I did take pictures of the cousins. Well, all except Teenager who left the room when he saw me get the camera out. 🙁

Maria and the cousins left around 7. The boys headed off and played together quietly *amazing* I got the kitchen clean and looked online for Black Friday ads. Did you go shopping Friday or did you spend Friday recovering from eating too much?
