Fill in the Blank Friday 4.13.12

1. Today is a good day because… I got to spend extra time with Rob.

2. The best thing I did all week was… I got to have lunch with my best bud.

3. The current weather is… chili and it makes me feel… cold.

4. The best thing about spring is… is the sites and sounds of new life; flowers blooming and birds singing.

5. A fashion trend that I’m dying to try out for spring is… fashion? What’s that? haha

6. A person who made me smile this week was… my best bud who I ate lunch with, Rob, my boys, and my student workers.

7. The most delicious thing I ate all week was… a very small amount of chocolate that I allowed myself to have. I miss eating chocolate everyday, but my waistline will one day be smaller and that will make me very happy.

Ultimate Blog Party 2012 {My Introduction}

Ultimate Blog Party 2012

Hey yall! Thanks for stopping by. Come in and get comfy! We’ve got Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, and coffee. 🙂

A little about me…..
I’m a mom of 2 boys (“Drew” who’s 14 & “Alex” who’s 8).
I’m a native Texan now living in Alabama. Auburn, Alabama that is.
I’m a graduate and now employee of Auburn University.
I love living in a college town.
I supervise college students as part of my job. I love it!
I used to teach elementary school.
I love to travel.
I’ve been on 6 cruises and have another one booked in September!
My boys keep us very busy.
My husband is my rock and my encourager.
I love to write (most of the time), but have never professed to be good at it. 😉 I used to be “the best writer in my class” according to all my English teachers, but I think I lost that gift as soon as I graduated from college.
I love reading blogs and love to have regular visitors. I lost most of regular visitors a few years ago when I “sh-tuff” going on and I wasn’t able to blog for several months. That really made me sad, but I continue to blog because I love reading through my archives.
I would love to hear from you and I promise that I will stop by your blog and say hi, too!

You can read even more about me here.
I’m on:

don’t even know what to title this………

I’m not sure I can even put my thoughts down in words, but I’m going to try. Yesterday afternoon Drew asked me to get on Facebook since I was at work and he was at home because he had something to talk to to me about. So I did and he proceeded to tell me in chat that one of his youth leaders at church had done something very bad. This youth leader, who I’ll call *Tom worked at a youth camp in another state last summer. Since then he’s come back here as this is his hometown, where he also attends college. Anyway, Tom was arrested yesterday for child molestation at the camp last summer. He is being held here until they extradite him back to state where the camp was held. While that doesn’t directly affect Drew, what does affect him is that Drew saw Tom as a good Christian man. This was someone he strived to be like. Drew looked up to this person and saw him as a role model. This guy helped Drew in his confirmation classes, in his weekly disciple group, at Sunday School, and weekly MYF. To say that Drew was devastated to learn this is an understatement.

Drew ended up not being able to get to sleep at his normal bedtime last night, so he got back on Facebook, where he proceeded to tell me that his emotions were just out of control. He said he just couldn’t imagine Tom doing something like that. Tom never showed any signs of any of this at church. Drew said he almost doesn’t believe it’s really true. We continued chatting and as the chat went on he felt better. I told him I was glad that he was talking about it and not trying to push his feelings away.

So today I’ve been a mess. All this has me just feeling blah. Although, I didn’t know this guy he obviously had a huge effect on my son and I know that he’s still struggling with the news of this. Like Drew said last night, he’s never had to deal with anything like this. He’s never had his trust so betrayed, especially not in such a vile manner. To know someone you had 100% trust in could go do something like that to boys younger than you? WOW! My mind is swimming and I’m not a teenager having to deal with this.

I talked with some of my student workers who are involved with our church’s college program. They are reeling from this as well. My point in bringing this up is that Tom was a likable guy, who others saw a good person who chose a Christ-centered life. Drew wasn’t the only person who was deceived. I know when I have something like this happen to me, I find myself questioning my character compass. You know the little voice in your head that says “yah, this is a good person, someone I can trust, someone who won’t steer me wrong.” Ya know? That was something I talked to Drew about last night and he said that he’s worried about finding out what bad things other people that he trusts have done. Man, what a hard feeling to swallow, but like I told him, it’s part of life and know like anything else, we have to take the lemons and make them into lemonade. Learn from it and move on. I know with time, Drew will take this sick feeling that he’s feeling now and will grow from it.

If you’re the praying kind, I would be appreciative of prayers for this situation, Drew, the boys that were hurt by this and their families, law enforcement to ensure they get the facts straight, and yes, I hope that you would pray for Tom and his family and really all that know Tom. There’s a whole lot of healing that needs to go on.

*Tom is not the guy’s name, but I chose not to use the specific details of all this. If you feel the need you can google it. Although, there are not a lot of facts being put out there because it is an on-going investigation.

March’s End of the Month Summary

Oops! Almost forgot to finish up on this and get it posted.

This month I was happy about: booking a cruise for the 4 of us in September!! Squeeeel!

This month I was sad about: the passing of one of our cub scout leaders and the huge turn out at his funeral. The wonderful memories from February’s trip to the McWane center will have a bit of a dark lining in my memory because that was the last time I saw him. He had to leave just after getting there because he was not feeling well. I guess in many ways that was the serious beginning to his end. 🙁

Something I accomplished this month was: finishing my sister’s wedding pictures.

Something new I did was: quit drinking diet coke!

Books I read were: The Help, but I actually had to give up on it. I’ll try it again later.
Catching Fire
The Running Dream

Movies I watched were: none. I can’t remember for sure if I watched a movie or not, but I don’t think I did.

TV Shows I watched were:
Gilmore Girls
Hungry Girl (Cooking Channel)
Drop 5 lbs(Cooking Channel)
Teen Mom 2

With Rob, we watched:
Amazing Race
The Voice
The Mentalist
Criminal Minds
CSI
CSI New York

Shows we decided to quit DVRing and are no longer watching:
American Idol! Yes, I am so happy about this. 5 hours of one show each week is just too much.

My favorite song this month was:
Our Go by Chris Tomlin

What I remember about work was: finding out that a good friend of mine (who I also work with), his wife is expecting a baby.

A lesson I learned this month was: I can survive with out Facebook and Diet Coke!

A friend and I: were too busy this month. 🙁

My favorite pic that I took was:

callawaygardens2012fieldtriptrey - 103

I cooked:
Chocolate Chunk Brownies with Peanut Butter Cookie topping
Parmesan crusted pork chops with spaghetti and homemade sauce
Chicken with Kraft Fresh Take Cheese & Breadcrumb mix (Rosemary & Garlic) with oven baked Sweet potato fries

The boys were: busy. Alex started soccer and went on a field trip to Callaway with his 2nd grade class. Drew had a concert & a competition. They enjoyed their spring break, just hanging around, going to game stop to spend some birthday money and gift cards. I took Drew shopping for some new shorts, too.

My husband was: overwhelmed with Cub Scouts Blue & Gold Banquet, District Pinewood Derby, and he was also asked at the last minute to help at another Emmaus Walk.

The thing I’ll remember most from this month was: finally getting to plan and book our cruise.

In about 5 months, we will be boarding that beautiful ship and heading off in the wide blue yonder. So in the mean time, I’m going to be researching our 4 ports of call, 3 of which we haven’t been to.

I’m just super giddy about this, so to help me with all this pent up excitement, I’m going to post a few of my favorite pics from our last 6 voyages (not in any particular order).

I survived a week without Facebook!

I told you last week that I was taking a week vacation from Facebook (FB). I did it for a couple reasons:
1. It was on my 100 in 1,001 list.
2. I wanted to see how my life would be different without it. My thoughts all along were that there would be no way I could do it.

So now I can mark this off my list. Yay! But even more importantly, I realized that I can live without FB. In fact, I can live without it quite nicely. I found that my thoughts throughout the day many times revolved around thoughts like, “I can put that on FB.” or “Hmmm…what could I say about this on FB?” As time went and I continued to have these thoughts, the voice in my head responded with, “You’re on a FB vacation, so you don’t need to worry about!” And I liked that answer!

It’s human nature (or at least my nature) to think about what others think. I write about things on FB to see what others think. Sometimes it may be a quote that I find or something I find on pinterest. Then, I go post it and I wait, and I check back to see if anyone responded, and I think about it, “I wonder if anyone responded to my post?” It’s a vicious, vicious cycle! Like Thursday night, when I wrote that I was taking a break from FB. I still had about 20 minutes or so before I had to log off at work at midnight, which is when I said that I was starting my break. I used that time looking back to see if anyone wrote a response to it. Then, the next day I was still curious. Since I wasn’t checking FB, I didn’t have that to worry about.

I usually always have FB up on a tab in my browser and any downtime I have throughout my day, I click back and read, sometimes wasting hours at a time. A quick glance turns into “Oh, I wonder what so and so is doing?” or someone posts something and I don’t believe it so I go google it see if it’s true. Again, wasting my day away. Last week when I was not on FB, I was able to be more productive with my time. I felt like my brain wasn’t cluttered with needless garbage. I think I actually felt less stress. It is really mind boggling how differently I felt.

So now that my week is over, I’ve resolved to:
– not always have a FB tab open.
– only check it periodically.
– not really post anything on it unless it’s just super-duper awesome.
– limit my visits to 10 minutes or less.

Are you on FB and do you find any of this to be true when you stop and think about it??
