Scripture Picture {Matthew 6:26}

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

I’m not normally squeamish…

Today I took Drew to the dentist, because last week at his orthodontist appointment, they expressed that he was still having over crowding and they felt it necessary to remove 4 permanent teeth. Do this this will make more room and allow the teeth to spread out a bit so his front teeth don’t have to jut forward anymore. So after sitting in the waiting room for about 20 minutes chatting with the office manager who I’m friends with, Drew was done. The Hygienist shared that there was a little more blood than they’re used to, so he needs to replace the gauze, yadda, yadda, yadda. No problem. Make the next appointment. Move on.

We’re in the car and I’m listening to Drew talk about how they shot his mouth up, how it was better than having a cavity filled, how there’s huge holes where his teeth used to be, how he really needs me to hurry and get home since his mouth is filling with blood…All of a sudden I start feeling clammy on my forehead and a bit nauseous. I breath in the cool air that was blowing from the AC vents, thinking this was nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe the drainage that I’m still having from my cold is upsetting my stomach some. We’re still about a mile and half from home and I realize it’s getting worse. I mention it to Drew and he says that he’ll quit talking about it. I start fanning myself with my hand and breathing with big deep breaths in and out. The kids are oddly quiet. We get stopped at a red light and start thinking I’m not going to make it home. I gun it when the light turns green. People are driving like they’re on the way to a funeral and I’m panicking big time! I’ve never thrown up in the car before, much less while I’m driving my kids around. About a half mile from home, I lose it. Just couldn’t keep calm long enough. It was gross. I still had 2 turns to make. As I pull into the drive away, I do it again and quickly open the door and lean out in an effort not to continue to get it all over everything. I go inside and start cleaning off my face when I realize I’m still not done, but I manage to get to my bathroom in time.

While I was in the house, Drew went outside and cleaned the inside of the car for me, which allowed me to go ahead and take a shower and get cleaned off. There was a great sense of relief. My tummy was a bit calmer and my clamminess subsided. I was just left wondering if all the talk of blood and pulling teeth actually made me squeamish. I’m not normally one to let those things bother me, but something obviously did!

Dear saleman at King Honda,
Please quit making unsolicited phone calls to my home and cell phone. No, really! I don’t want to trade in my 1994 Acura Legend. That’s why I haven’t answered my phone since the first time you called last year! Just fair warning, next time you call, you will be sorry!
MM

Dear Charter,
We pay you tons of money and we’d appreciate if our cable, internet, and phone would all work!
Thanks much!

Dear me,
Quit being sick! We have too much we need to be doing, don’t you think?
Thanks!

Dear Memorial Day weekend,
I am so happy you made it! You don’t know how happy I am that you’re here. Now just promise me you’ll be relaxing. K? K
🙂

Mom & Me Tea

Friday, I went to Alex’s class for the Mom & Me Tea, well, there was lemonade. The class read a poem called, “I’m Trying So Hard” It was so sweet. I wished I would have videoed it!
MomAndMeTeaMay2012-2ndGrade - 1

MomAndMeTeaMay2012-2ndGrade - 3

Letter

Here’s the poem:
I’m trying so hard
To be really good,
And do all the things
I know that I should.

But, I’m just a kid, Mom,
I’m messy and slow,
I don’t eat my veggies,
And I’ll clean my room, I know!

And I don’t pick my toys up,
And I don’t like my bath,
I’m trying to learn my spelling,
And I need help with my Math.

So, you’re stuck with me, Mom,
And I’m a lot of work, I know.
But I’m sure that you will help me
As I learn new things and grow.

I won’t always be so messy.
Some day I might be neat.
And then I won’t hide my veggies
Every time I eat!

My room might end up tidy,
I won’t complain about a bath,
Some day I’ll teach you how to spell
And I’ll be a genius at my Math.

But that might take a long, long time,
Cause, I’m still a kid you see.
I’ve got to grow up for a while,
Then I’ll make you proud of me.

So, thanks for understanding,
Like Mothers always do,
And for taking me the way I am
I will always love you.

Scout Expo 2012

Saturday we dropped Teenager off at a friend’s house as he would be riding up with another player for the 3rd game of state cup. The rest of us ventured over to Columbus, GA for part of a day. It was the 2nd Annual Scout Expo. Pack 29 didn’t have a booth, but we wanted to go check out the expo.

Lots of fun activities, from mystery boxes to making carpenter bee houses.

Dear week,
No offense, but I am so glad you’re over!
That is all!
MM

Dear driver,
When you’re sitting at a red light, do you forget that your car has windows? Yes, you may feel like you’re in your own little world, but I can see you digging in your nose. It’s gross.
MM

Dear Toomer’s Oaks,
I’ve loved seeing the new leaves bloom this spring. I drove by as they were pruning you this week. I sat at a long red light and watched them trim away dead branches. I pray that will help you to continue to be strong and fight. You have been the observer and participant in so many Auburn celebrations and we’d like you continue to be the center of attention after Auburn’s future wins. We believe in you!
Love you more than you know,
MM

Dear John Green,
The Fault in our Stars was one of my week’s obsessions. What started out as full box of tissues is now nearly half empty as I finished the last one-forth of this book, while balling my head off. After reading the last words of the book and putting the book down, I noticed the sea of crumpled tissues all around my chair. That made me laugh. The characters in this book were people I still find myself thinking about. You made them so real and I just felt so much of the emotion in this book. I loved it! Can’t wait to read another one of your books very soon!
Thanks for great work,
MM

Soccer Tourney 2012::Joe Wheeler State Park, AL

Last weekend, we ventured up to North Alabama, because Drew was competing in State Cup Soccer. He had a game Friday night and Sunday morning. Since we were going to have all Saturday with no games, we decided to stay about an hour away from the fields at Joe Wheeler State Park in the Lodge. Nice, large rooms with beautiful views of the lake. If you’re looking for a pristine place to stay I would not recommend this place. Although, it was nice and fine for us, someone who is looking for super clean won’t be happy. Since it is a State park, they don’t have the staff to keep all the bird droppings up or spiderwebs brushed away. We really liked it there and weren’t bothered by these things. It was quite peaceful and the view of the lake is gorgeous.

Saturday morning we ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant and then walked around the lake and over to the marina.

joewheelerlakemarina

The lake is clean and calm. Not a ton of boat traffic. Then we headed out for gas and water. On a whim we decided to go find the Amish community not far from us, up in Tennessee. Read about that adventure here.

This theater is Lawrenceberg where we were trying to hunt down the Visitor Center.

After getting back from that escapade, we took a look at the beach area on Joe Wheeler Lake. It was pretty crowded and people were smoking like there was no tomorrow, so we drove back to the lodge and went swimming in the pool.

As the day progressed we saw the hustle and bustle of people getting ready for a wedding. Before getting into the pool, I noticed the photographers were there and the bride and groom had their “first look.” I was equipped with my zoom lens, so I took a few shots from way across on the other side of the pool. They were so cute. Here you see the bride putting her hand on her soon to be husband’s shoulder, right before he turns around to see her for the first time dressed so elegantly in her wedding dress.

After a couple hours in the pool, we went back up to our room to change and Drew and Rob followed the Auburn Baseball game online for a few minutes. I asked Alex to be my model…

We decided to ride over to Florence, AL to find some place to eat. We ended up stopping at Crocodile Ed’s.

CrocodileEds-Florence,ALMay2012 - 6
I enjoyed the Fish Tacos. Rob had the Red Beans and Rice topped with Grilled Shrimp. He didn’t care for it because there was 6 shrimp on a huge bowl of Red Beans and Rice, which the beans were basically pinto bean with a few kidney beans sitting on a bed of plain white rice. He wasn’t pleased with what he ordered at all.

Alex got the Popcorn Shrimp on the Kid’s Menu, which by the way was not what you normally think of when it comes to Popcorn shrimp. Although, these were hand-breaded medium sized shrimp with the tails removed. Still delicious. The side he chose was Green Beans, which were fresh, which really have a different taste than canned or frozen green beans. He didn’t care for them much.

Drew had the Sirloin, which came out way overcooked, so they cooked another one and it was much better.

After dinner we relaxed in our room. I went for a stroll to see if the wedding reception was still going. They were dancing the night away and I experimented with long exposure pics. Here’s my favorite one:

Sunday we ate breakfast at the hotel again and raced over to the fields after packing up our room and loading the car. Here’s Drew at Statecup. See more pics here.

Day Trip To See the Amish 2012::Ethridge, TN

AmishEthridgeTNmay2012 - 4
Last weekend we were up in Decatur, AL, we made a quick trip up to Ethridge, TN to visit the Amish community that Rob had heard about. We did it on a bit of whim after putting gas in the car, so we did not know exactly where to go. We followed the signs to the Lawrenceburg Visitor Center until had driven all the way through to Ethridge. We ended up seeing this sign, where we turned down a dirt road that dead ended to a quaint house and shop building.

Amish in Ethridge, TN

As we got close to the house a young lady with a black cap (bonnet), a denim blue colored dress, with a white apron, wearing black tie up boots, came out to meet us. Rob told me he didn’t feel comfortable talking to her as we got out of the car, so I said hi, and told her we were there for their homemade jams.” She responded quietly in an accent like nothing I’ve heard before. Two little dogs followed us over to the shop, one an English Terrier, the other a Beagle mix. We walked over to the shop where there was a table covered in jars of homemade jams, chow chow, slaw, apple butter, and other spreads, jellys, and the like.
AmishJelly.May2012 - 36

I was very curious to hear the young girl speak some more, so I picked up one of the jars of Chow Chow and asked her what was in it. I found her accent to be so interesting that I would have loved to have heard her speak more. Teenager picked out the Watermelon jam and Rob picked up the apple butter and blackberry jam. I eyed what looked to be airfreshner. I picked up the Baked Apple Pie, took a sniff and decided I had to have it.
Amish.AirFreshnerMay2012 - 38

On the other wall hung the handmade saddlebags ranging in fabrics from camouflaged to neon pinks and yellows. We noticed a very large roll of insulating fabric that they cut out to make the body of each bag. A man sat over at the other end of the room with a manual sewing machine, making more saddlebags.

After making our purchase we headed back to the car where we circled around the tree where 2 horses were tethered. We noticed a very large tank of some type of gas, either propane or natural gas. We saw another lady, wearing a white cap (bonnet) doing laundry on a concrete area just off the main house.

dryweakley2

We needed to stop at the nearest gas station. We were happy to see this store on the corner called Marshall’s Grocery. This store was not just any gas station. When you entered they sold all sorts of goods, housewares, etc. You could tell they catered to the Amish.

Interesting store in Ethridge, TN

After leaving there we attempted to find the visitor center again, but it was closed. I had hoped to find some more signs to Amish goods, but the boys were bored so we abandoned the idea and drove back to Alabama. I’d like to come back to find more Amish. Ginger has a couple posts about Amish in Ethridge and a route map as well.
