Library Story #4

LibraryStories

Warm Fuzzies

A tall, tough looking guy walks up to the desk with a pile of big books. He places them on the desk and as he does so I see the forehead, eyes, and nose of a little girl as she peeks over the top of the desk trying to see. The little girl looks up to her daddy and whispers something. He looks down admiringly and tell his daughter that they have to check the books out before they can take them home.

There’s something so endearing about seeing a father bringing his children, especially his little girl, to the library. It brings warm fuzzies to me every time.

Teenager’s Room

During the month of June, Teenager and I worked to get his room clean. Here’s what we did:
-made three piles of clothes (keep, keepsakes, pass down to Monkey) The pile to pass down to Monkey was taller than me!
-shampooed carpet
-got stains out of carpet
-cleaned closet
-stained bookshelf
-rearranged furniture
-cleaned base boards
-organized everything
-fixed broken drawer
-fixed broken bookend
-spot cleaned walls

He’s very proud to have a nice clean, organized room. Now if he’ll just keep it from getting so gawd awful messy again, that will make me very happy. I always forget to take before pics. Here’s a few after pics.

Camp

This year Teenager decided to attend a different Boy Scout camp. Since his troop is so large they usually have 2 different groups go to 2 different camps. The last several years he’s gone up to North Carolina to Camp Daniel Boone, but this year he opted to stay in his home state of Alabama, and attend Camp Sequoyah.

His troop leaders are quite tech savy and for this summer’s camp outs, began blogging and posting pics through the weeks of camp. Well, I couldn’t have been any happier to find updates about what Teenager had done each day along with pics.

Since Teenager has completed all but a couple of his merit badges, he decided to for go the Merit Badge classes, and instead attend the Mountaineer Program.

During the Mountaineer Program at Sequoyah, boys have the chance to climb, rappell, kayak, and mountain bike, learn to throw tomahawks, take a trip to the Indian Village for Native American activities, canoe the Tallapoosa River, hike the Pinhoti Trail in the Cheaha Wilderness, climb the rock faces of the Rock Garden at Mt. Cheaha, and enjoy an overnight backpacking trip. Lots and lots of fun!

Here’s some pics taken by leaders of some of the activities…

Very proud that Teenager was chosen by his Mountaineer Leader for the “Golden Bike Wheel Award” of the Week!

Camp Sequoyah

Wednesday is usually family day at BSA camps. Since he was quite a bit closer this year, we decided go up for a visit. I was so impressed to see Teenager put his leadership skills to work just in the short time were there. I loved how the younger scouts look up to him and respect him. It made me so proud to see him growing as a young man. Here’s some pics I took while we were there…

Like father, like son. Teenager begged and begged on Wednesday when we were there to bring him a Dr. Pepper, so Friday night when Rob showed up to camp he surprised him with a DP!

Don’t hide stuff here!

A few weeks ago, we were traveling somewhere and Monkey was “playing a game” with Teenager, where he would hide the folded-up straw wrapper and Teenager would have to guess where it was. Monkey had a brilliant place to put it. See the pic below. I wasn’t aware of what was going on in the back seat, but at some point, I turned around and realized Monkey didn’t have his seat belt on. As any good mom would do, I told him to put the seat belt on immediately. So he attempted to, but couldn’t because he has forgotten he had put the paper just inside the latch. At that point, it was too late. The paper had been shoved down into the latch. Since we were flying down the interstate, I couldn’t risk trying to look at it, so we instructed him to move over to the middle seat and sit right next to his brother and that they better get along!!

So the other day, I went out to the car fairly early in the day as it was supposed to get up in the 100’s by the afternoon. After about an hour of messing with the paper and using various tools to get it out, I finally did. I tried to latch the seat belt, but it still wouldn’t go in. Baffled, I started thinking, while looking over in the middle console, where I found the plastic fork with a couple prongs broken off. “Noooo! Noooo!” were the first 2 thoughts in my head followed by some words I won’t say here. I went inside and ask Monkey if he or his brother had tried to get the paper out with a plastic fork and he said, “Yes, Teeanger tried to help by using the plastic fork and it broke off in there.”

Teach your children not to put stuff in the seatbelt latch!

After another hour, lots of bad words running through my head, a gallon of sweat excreted from my pours, and a trip to Walgreens for batteries for the flashlight, I finally got the plastic prong out. Luckily, that fixed it! So teach your children not to put stuff in the seatbelt latch and save yourself a lot a trouble. 🙂

Date Night in Decatur

Yesterday, we dropped the kids off so that they could hang out with their Uncle Nick while Rob and I escaped for a date night in Decatur, GA. One of Rob’s buddies from high school, Jason Passmore, had a CD release party at the Java Monkey.

After finding a parking spot and locating Java Monkey, we walked around to find something to eat, as the Java Monkey just sells drinks, appetizers, finger foods and desserts. Nothing real substantial. We ended up eating at a little spot right around the corner called Noodle House. It’s a locally owned, Atlanta Chain, that was reasonably priced for the amount of food and very palatable! We ordered Korean Dumplings, Beef & Broccoli, & Kung Pao.

We finished up just in time to find a good seat at Java Monkey, chatted with Jason, and got another drink before the show began.

If you enjoy jazz, I highly recommend his CD, Beautiful Day. You can buy it on iTunes here or if you prefer to have an actual CD, you can buy those here.

A little side note about Decatur; It’s a super cute, trendy area. I wished I could have gotten some pictures to show you, but Rob and I loved it and plan to go back.
