July’s End of the Month Summary

This month I was happy about: vacationing in the mountains.

This month I was sad that: the passing of Rob’s Grandmother.

Somethings I accomplished this month were: 2 steps forward, 1 step back to getting the house as clean as I would like it.

Something new I did was: go see Aerosmith in concert.

Books I read were:
SnApp Shots: How to Take Great Pictures with Smartphones and Apps
One Tuesday Morning (9/11 Series, #1) by Karen Kingsbury (very very good!)
Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery: An Illustrated History and Guide

Movies I watched were:
Crazy, Stupid, Love (tried to finish, but it ended up getting on my nerves)

TV Shows I watched were:
The Olympics
America’s Got Talent
The Bachelorette
Burn Notice
Whale Wars
King of Queens
Drop Dead Diva
Gator Boys
Call of the Wild Man
Love in the Wild

My favorite song this month was: mmmm….I guess if I had to pic one it would be Wide Awake by Katy Perry.

What I remember about work was: CopyCat going away and dealing with the copiers.

A lesson I learned this month was: as hard as you may try to be prepared, you will still have to go to the grocery store on vacation.

A friend and I: enjoyed our “once a year” lunch together. 🙂

My favorite pic that I took was:
Well I took SO many pics this month, it was honestly impossible to choose just one. So I chose this one, because when I saw this old toilet made into a flower pot, it made me smile. Seeing the pic still makes me smile and today I needed that.

Toilet de Flower Pot?

I cooked: banana pudding and a few things during our 4th of July trip (pulled pork, homemade waffles mix)

The boys: really enjoyed hiking on the 4th of July trip.

My husband was: still busy.

The thing I’ll remember most from this month was: the fact that I took WAY too many pics on our 4th of July trip. I guess that’s a good thing?

What was the best part of your July?

Baton Rouge Visit::July 2012

I feel like I haven’t blogged in forever! I am so far behind and with each passing day, I get farther and farther behind. It’s so frustrating, but life has been so busy. Although, it’s summer, it sure doesn’t feel like except for the HEAT outside. Sometimes I think life would be easier if we all had a pause button, so I could get caught up! Never hurts to dream, right? Well, I’m going to do my best this week to get caught up on my pictures and my blog.

Friday July 20th, we picked Teenager up at the end of Sweat Week and headed to Baton Rouge for a long weekend. Rob’s Grandmother passed away on July 16th and Rob’s Dad and Uncle were nice enough to push the funeral out to the weekend. After a fairly uneventful drive down, we arrived at Candi’s house (Rob’s cousin) about midnight. Saturday morning was visitation and the funeral. Then, we went back to Candi’s for a huge feast that was provided by the church and Rob’s Dad (I think).

Here’s the fam:

Candi’s kids and our kids instantly bonded. It has been a couple years since they’ve seen each other, you would have never known they were apart. Monkey and C-Bob were attached at the hip all weekend. Teenager stayed busy entertaining several different kiddos.

Sunday we went to church with the family and then anxiously prepared Jambalaya! Here’s the guys cookin’ it up.

While the big boys were cooking, Monkey was playing with Sadie.

Sunday afternoon, I laid down for a nap while Rob, Teenager, Papere, and Uncle Rick played golf and later that evening Rob and I snuck out for dinner. It was late so our choices were slim. We were wanting good ole Cajun. We went to Walk-Ons on Coursey. I had the Catfish Platter and Rob had Crawfish Etoufay. We shared the Boudin Balls for an appetizer. All good quality. My Catfish platter had a bunch of catfish; very generous serving.

Monday we met up with Papere and Uncle Rob (Papere’s cousin) and set out to visit the campus of LSU. We walked around part of the campus. Here’s a few pics.

One of the first things, Rob said when we found out we were going to Baton Rouge was “CHIMES!!” Since the last time we went to Baton Rouge and ate at Chimes (East), it has been on top of Rob’s “go to” restaurants. Before leaving Baton Rouge that day we ate at the Chimes near LSU’s campus.

Rob had the Red Beans and Rice. I had New Orleans-Style BBQ Shrimp (picture below). It was deletable. I was so full after the appetizers, salad, that I passed around and everyone else agreed that it was “to. die. for!” I’m hooked now.

Third July 4th Trip 2012::Blairsville, GA {Day 5}

Sunday we headed out to the Track Rock Gap Archaeological Area to see petroglyphs made by Native Americans. Most of them were so weather-warn you could hardly make out the shapes, but I just stood there closed my eyes and imagined the Natives pounding away at the rocks to make those carvings. Amazing!

We left there and drove over to the John C. Campbell Folk School, which is a school that allows a non-competitive, adult learning community offering classes in art, cooking, craft, dance, gardening, music, etc. that vary in length.

Third July 4th Trip 2012::Blairsville, GA {Day 4}

Saturday was kind of a lazy day, much to Rob’s chagrin. He and my FIL, David, ended up going to the store for steaks and also to check out a couple spots. After they got back we ate lunch and decided to go tubing at Pappy’s. Everytime we left the cabin, we passed this place and it peaked our curiosity. It was like $6 for an hour of tubing, but it ended up being nearly 2 hours on the river. Really great for the money!

Then, when we got done tubing we walked around Pappy’s. There’s a general store and restaurant. Lots of fun “junk” to take pics of! I was in heaven. 🙂

Tubing made us quite hungry, so when we got home the boys lit the fire and go the steaks going. YUM!

We, finally, got to see the sunset. Amazing!

That night we went up to Brasstown Bald to see the stars. Everyone but Rob and I hiked up to the top. Rob and I stayed in the parking lot area, laid on top of picnic table and looked at the stars. We both saw a shooting star….awwwww….

See all the Day 4 pics here. I have pics form our disposable water cameras, but I don’t have those developed yet.

Third July 4th Trip 2012::Blairsville, GA {Day 3}

Friday we got up, had a quick breakfast, and headed out to see if we could get any fish to bite. Since we needed to find out a good place to fish and get some bait, so we stopped at Paradise Bait and Tackle. We saw signs for it as we drove toward the river. Turned out to be a little building on someone’s property. My MIL had to use to restroom, so the man called up his Mama and asked, “are you dressed? cuz I gots a young lady customer who needs to use the facilities.”

There were several small fish caught and thrown back in.

After an hour or two of fishing, lunch was in order, before our next adventure. We ate pulled pork sandwiches with mac ‘n cheese and beans back at the cabin.

Then we went to Young Harris College for a private tour and cosmic concert show. Rob was in the Sky Club when he was in college there, so he was able to set it up with the current director at the Planetarium.

After the show, Rob showed us around campus a bit.

We got in the car and drove around campus. We saw some small falls on campus called Cupid Falls.

Then, we went to a park on Lake Chatuge. So beautiful.
Lake Chatuge

We ate dinner in Hiawasee at the Daniel’s Steakhouse, which had a buffet. Food was not that great, but was a decent deal for the money.

After dinner we went back to Young Harris Planetarium for the public show. When the show was over everyone at the show was invited to go to the observatory. We were unsure if we should go, because that night it was pretty overcast, in which case we obviously wouldn’t be able to see anything. Teenager was super eager to go, so we drove over there to see if it would clear up. When we got there, all we could see was a star called Spica, which isn’t very exciting to look at from the telescope. After everyone looked at Spica, they turned the telescope to see if we could see Saturn, and we were so excited to see it. It was awesome!

This is not my pic, but this is exactly how we saw Saturn that night.

Third July 4th Trip 2012::Blairsville, GA {Day 2}

Day 2 started with some homemade waffles and jambalaya quiche and some web surfing while surrounded in the beauty of the mountains.

Soon after, we threw on our swimsuits and hiking boots and headed to Helton Creek Falls

After lunch, several of us decided to hike at Dukes Creek Falls.
Dukes Creek Falls

Daisy loved it!
Dukes Creek Falls
If I’d only had had my video camera. As we were walking along the trail, Daisy spotted a squirrel and thank goodness the squirrel was running up on the left hand side of the trail, because Daisy took after it. It was quite a steep incline but some how Daisy made her way up, only to quickly slide back down. She tried it again and this time made it even higher, only to slip and then T-bone a tree on the way down. OUCH! It was hilarious for us, but probably pretty painful for her. God was looking out for her though because if that squirrel would have gone to the right, it had to be a 100+ foot drop.

When we made it to the falls, the over 100 foot set of falls was unbelievable. One of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. Pictures don’t even come close to doing it justice.

We enjoyed the sites and sounds of the falls for a bit and then hiked back to our car.

For dinner Rob, with the help of the rest of us, cooked his homemade pasta, sauces, and meatballs. YUM!

Third July 4th Trip 2012::Blairsville, GA {the Cabin}

Here’s the cabin, we stayed in for the 4th of July trip this year. It was hands down the nicest and biggest cabin we’ve stayed in. It’s a 3 bedroom 3 1/2 bath with a large playroom on the bottom floor complete with games, foosball, and air hockey. Sleeps 9-10. It’s located in Blairsville, Georgia, which is just the location we’ve been trying to stay in since we started this tradition. The views from the cabin are amazing, but I’ll warn you that when you turn on the the street where the cabin is located it’s extremely steep; To say I was horrified every time we made out way back up the mountain is an understatement as I cringed, holding my breath with my eyes squeezed shut as our Honda inched it’s way up the road.
