Cruise 2012 {Day 1}

Cruise 2012 {Day 1} on the Carnival Dream - Day of Embarkation

Here’s my first of probably at least 7 posts about our cruise earlier this month that will include lots of cruising tips. They may be a little spread out, but I’m just super busy now and am working on writing these up and going through photos as I have time.

Friday we left to head up to Valley, AL to watch Teenager march during halftime. We had made arrangements before hand to snatch him up as soon as they came off the field and head south. That’s exactly what we did. I think it was almost 9 pm when we got out of there and we were just hoping to make it as far as possible. We had an 8 hour drive if we were to get all the way down to Port Canaveral, but we’d already decided that that wasn’t going to happen. We ended up stopping at the Quality Inn in Alachua, FL just north of Gainsville. Just quick note about that. This was the first place we stopped. It was a decent rate for 1am or whatever time it was when we stopped, but I don’t recommend this hotel. Bathroom door didn’t close all the way, hot water ran out quickly, wake-up call never rang…

Saturday we woke up at 6:30am and continued southbound. We stopped at Dunkin Donuts on the Turnpike; Picked up some donut holes and some caffeine and forged on.

During our planning of the cruise, we looked to see how much it costs to park at the port. We discovered that the prices had gone up; for a 7-day cruise it would be $120. I think before when we parked at the port it was about $10/day not $17. Exploring different options, we found there to be a few companies that specialize in cruise parking and transportation to the ship. We read reviews from the Radisson all of which were good. $5.95 a day and you don’t even have to stay there. We booked ahead online. We payed right around $50 after taxes, etc. Highly recommend doing this instead of parking at the port!

We arrived at the Radisson around 10:30. My stomach was going crazy, rumbling, so as soon as we got there I took off for the restroom inside the hotel. When I came out Rob was like, “Get in, we gotta drive over there and get on the shuttle!” Rush, rush, rush! Which in most cases I’m good with that, but when your stomach is not being nice, it’s not so fun. Everything turned out fine. We went over to the next stop, where they took our luggage and put it on the shuttle. Meanwhile, I’m frantically shuffling around to make sure everything from the car that we hadn’t packed initially got put in the appropriate bags. I grabbed my purse and my carry-on, Rob drove the car off and parked it where it would stay all week, we hopped on the shuttle, and off we went to the cruise port! DANG! That was awesome. During the quick jaunt over to the cruise port, I’m thinking and looking to make sure that nothing was left in the car. All seemed good, so I enjoyed looking around the rest of the way to the port. Our ship was socked near the Disney Fantasy and the Carnival Ecstasy.

Carnival Ecstasy & Disney Fantasy
After about a 10 minute ride, we hopped off the shuttle, ensured that our luggage was removed from the bus and put on the carts for the Dream, and then, we headed inside. (**so exciting**) The embarkation process went so quickly and smoothly. From start to finish, I would say it only took 20 minutes. From the time we walked into the terminal til the time we set foot on ship. Carnival has it. going. on!

The Gangway

I think know that I was the most excited when we entered the gangway. Although, I think Monkey was a close second. After entering the ship, we headed straight for the bar to purchase our Coke Cards, which are now called Bottomless Bubbles. [$4.50 a day per child; $6.00 a day per adult]

After that we found our way inside to buffet bars. I opted for the Italian bar on Deck 10 at The Gathering, while the boys jumped in the Mongolian Grill line. I rounded my first meal on the Dream off with a piece of Chocolate Mint cake, although, it was hardly mint. Oh so yummy!

My first taste of chocolate on the cruise and must add the best taste of chocolate all week!

After we ate, we went to check out the Kids’ Program areas; Camp Carnival for Monkey and Circle C for Teenager.
-2012-09-01 12.07.38

After we checked out those rooms, it was time for our cabin to be ready, so we excitedly went to see it; Cabin 8212 with a Balcony.

Later, the kids got their swimsuits on and went to Water Works where they rode all the water slides on the ship. Rob and I sat in the Adult only Serenity area that’s not far from there.

-2012-09-01 13.23.20

After hanging out at the Serenity Deck, Rob and I gave the kids instructions to meet us back at the cabin just before the Emergency Drill. He and I went to the bar for a drink and then back to the cabin. To our amazement, our luggage had been delivered! Rob promptly got busy unpacking for us all, so that we could stow the luggage under the beds. The kids met us back in time for the life boat drill.

A quick note about the Life Boat Drill. Carnival has revamped many things since the last time we cruised in 2008. The life boat drill is now condensed. You meet at your Muster Station and stay there for instructions on how to wear your life jacket, where you would go to get on your life boat, etc. You don’t actually leave your Muster Station like we used to. You also no longer have to wear your life jacket to the drill. Kudos to Carnival for this improvement!

After that we went back to the room to watch us set sail. We usually go to a deck to watch, but since we had a balcony, we just went back to our cabin. We watched as they detached the ropes. In the distance we could see Cape Canaveral.

Our cabin was Port Side Forward on the Veranda deck. We could look to our right and see the bridge, which was pretty cool. The guy facing us is the Captain Massimo Marino along with another officer.

Next on the agenda was Youth Program Orientation. During the Orientation, we were introduced to a new addition to the ship entertainment (which I was super excited to see), a dance group called Fun Force Dancers. Fun Force Dancers is a group of 4 guys who break dance, crump, etc.

Following that was dinner. We found our seating arrangement to be a table of 4 in a set up with a 1 long bench with several tables of 4 down the bench with 2 chairs pushed in on the other side. For our first dinner here’s what we ate:
Monkey had beef and barley soup, tropical fruits, sweet and sour shrimp, sherbet
Teenager had tropical fruit, beef and barley soup, chicken à la grecque, ? dessert
Rob had fresh fruit cocktail, sweet and sour shrimps, vanilla creme brulee
I had guacamole and tomato salsa, gazpacho andalouse, braised beef brisket in gravy, warm chocolate melting cake.

After dinner we went out to see the sunset and get a couple pictures.

Returning to our room, we found the pullman had been pulled down along with our towel animal, chocolates, and our fun time newsletter for tomorrow.

-2012-09-01 19.00.44

We decided to head up to Lido deck to watch some of the Alabama game and see if we could see the score for Auburn’s game.
-2012-09-01 19.15.44

The Lido deck was saturated with obnoxious Bama fans, so we went to the Encore Theater to watch Game Show Mania, while the kids went off to their Meet-N-Greets with the Youth Programs.

-2012-09-01 19.59.56

Finally, it was time for the Welcome Aboard Show, so we got the boys. Afterwards, we grabbed some free ice cream and watched The Welcome Aboard Laser Show out on the Lido Deck and went back to the cabin.

Here you see our Captain talking with the Cruise Director to his right and other officers to his left.

Before going to bed we went outside to the balcony and was surprised to see the Disney Fantasy sailing by at a much quicker speed. We laid down for a very comfy night and had sweet dreams of the next day which would behold lots more fun.

Each day you get a newsletter with the schedule and other need to know information. Here’s the one for today:

Game Day for Scouts

Saturday was Scout Day at Auburn University’s football game, which means all Scouts and Scout leaders get in free! It was an 11:20 kick off which made for another early day. Rob is in charge of giving out tickets for the Boy Scouts, so we had to be on campus at 9am. We took the shuttle over and while we were waiting for our stuff to be set up, my friend, MJ, and I decided to go over to the Alumni tent. While I was there, I had someone come up and asked if I was “Magnolia Mom.” To tell you the truth, I was a bit taken aback as I don’t think I’ve ever had anyone have the courage to come up and ask. I thought it was rockin’ awesome though, so I’m giving a big shout out to Wendy! If I would have been in my right mind, I would have whipped out my camera and had MJ get a pic of us. But like I said, I was a bit out of it…

The game was a bit scary. The sun was blaring down and I was roasting quite nicely, so after half time when MJ said she was leaving, I took advantage and left with her. The boys stayed with Rob to see the exciting ending. Here’s a few pics from the game.

Calgon take me away….

As if it weren’t difficult enough coming back from a week long vacation. Getting back to reality after a week away is just down right hard. We’ve also had (one or more) furry little creatures inhabit our home while we were away. A water leak in the kitchen, which has now caused damage. To-do-lists piled up to our eyeballs. And now, I think I’m getting sick. So maybe I’m not asking Calgon to take me away, but I would ask God to give us the strength and wisdom to get through all this. And a day with no drama, would be nice too. 🙂

A Busy Friday

Friday was a busy day. As much as I had hoped to get a lot of items marked off my to-do-list, it just didn’t happen. I spent about half a day at work. Fridays are not usually days that I work but it was our Open House. I was on the committee for that, so it was necessary for me to be there. I didn’t take a lot of pics, because I was busy working it. Here’s a collage with a couple shots.

Tailgate at the Library

Friday evening I went to see Teenager march at the football game. I went by myself because Rob and Monkey were at a Cub Scout Pack meeting. Here’s a few pics. I will post the videos a little later.

Bon Voyage, Y’all

This month has been crazy!! I have been swamped with soccer league and soccer tourney pics the last month. I’ve barely had time to be excited about sailing on Saturday…OK, I admit, I’ve made time to be excited about our cruise. This past weekend me and a friend who I hired to help me shoot a soccer tourney took over 9,000 total pictures. So this week, we had to weed through them and thank goodness for Rob has gotten them put on the online galleries. So most hours that I was not working, this week I’ve spent them dealing with soccer pics. That didn’t leave a lot of time for packing and ensuring we’re all prepared for this cruise.

The rest of the family has been busy and have hardly been home in the evenings. So they’re just as unprepared as I am if not more so. I have never been less than 24 hours away from leaving to drive/fly to port and not been mostly packed. This terrifies me. There’s just so much more to think about when packing for a cruise, it seems like. I’m trying so hard to be prepared and ensure that we have everything. I know it will get done tomorrow…it has to, right?

I’ll sigh a huge sigh of relief when we step on that ship Saturday. Let the relaxation and family fun begin. Bon Voyage, Y’all.

Funny things my kids say…

While discussing the fact we’ll get to eat lobster on the cruise, Teenager says, “I’m not sure I like crustaceans!” I laughed for 5 minutes straight after that.

So I never told you about the scooter….

Scooter

Yah, so I’m just a few months late getting this story up. Nothing too exciting really. I just needed pictures of the thing was the main hold back. A friend of ours was moving and hence, selling a bunch of stuff. One of the things they were getting rid of was this scooter. We thought of several reasons why we thought it might be good to get it. We took it for a test drive and bought it the next day. We don’t drive it on a regular basis now, but it is nice to have a 3rd form of transportation available.

The boys riding with Dad through the neighborhood.

Scooter

Zoom! Zoom!
Scooter
Shhh……For me, I’m actually terrified to ride on it…much less drive it.

Back to School {2012}

School finally started today! It was supposed to start 2 weeks ago, but just before school was out our state legislature decided to mandate schools to start later this year. For years they’ve been talking about forcing schools to start after Aug. 20th, because “it’s hurting our beach tourism.” Anyway, we were all happy for school to be back in session. I was real happy with the teacher that Monkey got. TV Boy had Mrs. S for 3rd grade, so I was happy that Monkey got her too! I think it’s going to be a great year. We had a good talk with the boys about our expectations yesterday after church, so we’re hoping to see all A’s this year!

Back to School

Here’s a fun little collage. This is from Monkey’s first year in school, Kindergarten to now.

k-3text

Back when I was teaching I didn’t get pics of TV Boy, because I always left before he got up. 🙁 Makes me sad.

Library Story #5

Library Story

Today at work a lady called in reference to her son’s bursar bill that had a fine for a book that was never turned in. She wanted to know what the title of the book was. Well with a specific question like that we get into the issue with privacy. I politely told her due to privacy reasons, I couldn’t answer any specific question such as that.

My boss happened to be standing there and he joked saying that we could have all sorts of issues if we were to talk to parents about their kids’ accounts, like what if it was a book about $ex. I was curious so I pulled up his account. Turns out the book he never turned in was Fifty Shades Darker, which is the 2nd book of the Fifty Shades series. If you don’t know anything about this series, you’re not missing anything. Anyway, I remember when this guy came to check this book out for his girlfriend who had called several times before the book came in asking when we were going to get the book.
