Turkey Baaaster

Ok, I have a work story for ya. It’s actually from back in January, but my student just reminded me about it. One of my student workers, Kelsey, was starting to read her textbook for her medical ethics class. She was in the introduction part of the book, where it referred to something about the unconventional use of the good ole turkey baster. Well, Kelsey had silently reread the sentence several times trying to make sense of the idea that the author was trying to convey. So she turns around and is like, “Ms. Lysha, what is a turkey băster?” (note the short ă sound!)”

A smile sneaks it’s way up as I’m trying not to bust out laughing at the way she said it. “Kelsey, it’s turkey bāster, first of all. Let me read the context of how it’s being used.” In the back of my head, I’m thinking back to my days of trying to conceive and the ongoing joke on all the forums, like babycenter.com, etc, how people would supposedly get desperate enough to try artificial insemination at home. But before I go telling her that I wanted to make sure that’s how it was being used in the text. I read the sentence twice and read it aloud to her (the teacher in me) and began to explain it to her. Her cheeks began to turn bright red as she started laughing in high-pitched giggly way, which is actually quite funny in itself. I googled “turkey baster” and I came across this step-by-step article. I start reading it to her as she looks over my shoulder and is laughing hysterically as my co-worker (male) stands up to get a look at us, “What in the heck are yall talkin’ ’bout over thur?”

We stop laughing, look at each other, and just break out into silly giggle-ness again. Kelsey finally answers, “You don’t wanna know, Mr. Joe! You don’t wanna know!”

I went into work and noticed the cool looking clouds.

Came out an hour later to drive to other side of campus and they had spread all the way across the sky.

Sugar Bowl Trip 2005::New Orleans, LA

It’s not like I don’t have enough to do, but I find these little things that irritate me that become my obsession until I do them. One of which is going through my old Xanga posts namely Travel posts and reposting them with pics and more cohesiveness. The first one I found after talking to some of my student workers about going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I looked back at my post from them and was like “GAG!” So here’s my first post recreation.

Sugar Bowl

In January 2005, Rob and I went to Louisiana for the New Year. Auburn had gone undefeated that year in football and was playing in the Sugar Bowl. We decided to make a trip out of it, so we went a few days earlier and stayed with Rob’s family in Baton Rouge. They were also helpful in keeping the kids for us while we spent the day in New Orleans. Although, I driven right by it many times, this was my first experience there. I felt lucky to be to have seen it before Katrina hit later that year.

We got up pretty early for the 40 minute drive over to meet up with Rob’s Step Dad and brother.

We had lunch at:

This was very good even though they didn’t have what had been recommended to us. They were out of it!!!

War Eagle! in New Orleans

We walked and walked and walked around New Orleans! We rode on a Street Car a couple times, which gave us a little break. Later that day we were very lucky to get into Cafe Du Monde for a snack of beignets and coke! With the Sugar Bowl crowd, it was packed.

That afternoon before the game we hung out around the Super Dome to see our Tigers arrive and cheer them on during Tiger Walk.

After the game we were hungry so we wound up having dinner at:
Tony Moran’s Restaurant (Jean Lafitte Bistro)
(Above The Old Absinthe House)
240 Bourbon Street

This was good, but not worth all the $$$money$$$. I had my first hurricane!

Church Retreat {2013}

Ha! I thought I posted this several weeks ago, but for some reason it was in my ‘drafts.’ Better late than never, right?

ChurchFamilyRetreat2013 488
The past 3 years Teenager has attended the Winter Retreat for the Youth at Shocco Springs. They usually have about 500 youth and about 100 adults go and he just loves it! Since he and his friends have started attending they always come back telling stories of God, spreading the word, and the football game…a boys vs girls football game; one for each grade level. It’s an amazing time and he always comes back on fire for God. Just love to see that in him.

Well, during the same time that the youth retreat is going on, at the same camp, there’s also a Church-wide retreat. This year we decided to go. We had a wonderful time. With a church of 4,000+ there’s always new faces to see and meet. That we did. Our worship leaders were:
Kory Knott of Argyle UMC so inspirational
ChurchFamilyRetreat2013 531

Rob Webster of Covenantn in Dothan, AL was our music leader, also very talented and quite inspirational. He used to be at Adam Hamilton‘s church in Kansas.

We enjoyed Kory’s 5 different sermons about Jesus’s journeys. Each sermon was prefaced with a story about Kory, from the “the Kory Files” by one of our current church staff members, who used to work with him when he was at Highland Park UMC. That happens to be the church where my Dad got remarried. Here’s Lisa telling a story about Kory

After getting settled in our room, we met for the weekend kickoff. We enjoyed our first sermon led by Kory. The kids were in there with us for the singing and then they got taken away to do kid stuff.

57.365 {First Soccer Game of the Season}

AHS Jr. Varsity Soccer Game

Tonight was Teenager’s first game as an AHS Jr. Varsity player. He got to play most of the game. It was very, very cold, but luckily Auburn won (by a landslide!)

Egg, Ham, & Spinach Muffin Recipe

I’m making every effort to cut back on carbs whenever possible. I found these mini-egg muffins easy to make a head of time. Each morning, I just pop a couple in the microwave for about 45 seconds and add some fresh fruit on the side.

EggHamSpinachMuffinRecipe

Servings: 24
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:
2 cups Kroger Break-Free Real Egg Product or about 6 large eggs
8 pieces ham
10-15 fresh spinach leaves with the stem removed; chopped finely
1/2 cup finely chopped green pepper
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
2-3 finely chopped roasted red pepper
1 1/2 cup shredded cheese
1 tbsp of tabasco (optional)
pepper to taste

Egg, ham, & spinach muffins {mini-quiches}

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Put eggs in large bowl add in Tabasco and pepper and scramble with fork
3. Add in other ingredients (except cheese) and stir until mixed evenly
4. Pour into mini-muffin tin till each cup is almost full
5. Place shredded cheese on top of each cup
6. Cook for 15-20 minutes until cooked through. I always test with a toothpick. If the inside isn’t quite done, but the top is getting too brown, I place a piece of foil loosely over top to prevent cheese from burning.
7. Let cool for a few minutes. (Rounded dome tops may ‘deflate’ some in the cooling process.)

54.365 {Deliveries}

Today Teenager’s Boy Scout troop delivered Yellowbooks to help fundraise. Needless to say it was not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination!

Rob was in-charge of heading this project up, but he had to leave to take Monkey on a cub scout trip. Guess who got delegated to be “in-charge”?
