Wal-Mart Encounter

The other day I was at Wal-Mart and just as I was coming up to the conveyer belt to start unloading my stuff, this guy runs up and gives me this little grin. The grin told me that he was about to ask a favor. I mean why else would this young, college-aged, male be grinning at me. And I was right, he asked me to go in front of me since I had a cart full and he was holding a 24 case of Keystone and 2 bottles of wine. I told him to jump in.

Just 5 More Minutes

I wrote this last Friday morning and forgot to post it.

As I was sitting in my chair, finishing breakfast, and catching up on my blog reading this morning, I looked at the clock. It read 6:00 and thought to myself, “Just 5 more minutes, please?” knowing that I should be heading up stairs to start the sometimes daunting task of waking up the boys. Dealing with an 8 year old’s whining about not being able to get his sock on just perfect so that he can’t tell he’s wearing socks and a 2 year old’s whining about not wanting to get up. If it’s not that it’s 8 year old griping because we don’t have what he wants for breakfast and the 2 year old griping because I didn’t let him have his turn for opening the door or turning off the light.

But when I thought of “just 5 more minutes” it reminded me of my boys, who while swimming I’ll warn them they have 5 more minutes till we have to get out. And just as I did as a child, will beg for 5 more minutes even after the time is up. I feel like I’m always pleading with myself to just have 5 more minutes of peace and quiet in the morning time. Or 5 more minutes before I make myself go to bed for much needed sleep. Or 5 more minutes at work that I can cram in those 20 other things I need to get done. With such busy lives these days it seems like people are on a tighter schedule, running here, taking the kids there, dropping off the mail, or going to get groceries. I’m curious about times way back like when my grandparents were growing up. Surely, it wasn’t like that back then. When I think back to those days it seems as if they had all the time in the world to sit on the porch and sing or sit on the living room floor playing jax. How I wish I could sometimes have enjoyed relaxed care-free times like they had. Don’t you?

I was just looking at Everyday with Rachael Ray and while glancing at the recipe archive I saw this! Peanut Butter and Bacon on Banana Bread? Some how peanut butter with bacon on banana bread doesn’t sound so good to me. I think that’s a recipe I’ll be skipping. Watcha think?

H-E-L-P!

Alright, peoples! I need your help. Every year at my work we do a secret pal thing. Ya know where you draw a name and you get a list of their favorite candy, etc. And you’re supposed to leave that person something each week without them knowing until Christmas time. Guess what! I drew my boss, who happens to be male! Yah, I can think of lots of things to get him, but they’re all expensive things (like a Lowe’s gift card, nice dress shirts, etc) He likes Snicker’s bars, Longhorn restaurant, 80’s music, Jamaica, and Porsches! He is always very well dressed and he is a neat freak. I just don’t know what little types of things to get him. Would love suggestions!

Work ramblings…

Well, back to the old grind tomorrow. Last week was filled with lots of meetings and workshops. We were allowed only a few hours to work in our rooms and plan. Luckily, I had spent quite a bit a time at home planning and quite a bit of time at school decorating and cleaning. I will say the school looks really nice with the new carpet and paint. We also got shiney new white boards. We’re each getting 27 inch TVs with DVD players installed in our rooms. Anyway, so the students come tomorrow for a full day. In the past we’ve had a half day the first day of school, which is super convenient for teachers, not necessarily for parents. Some brilliant legislator said students must be in attendance for at least 6 hours to count as a day, so no more half days for us. Alabama’s govenor also pushed to have 5 mores days of school added for students, which ended up being passed. Luckily, we got a 5% raise to offset those days.

We had our “meet the teacher” night Thursday and I had 12 students attend. Friday was registration, so I had 3 or 4 more students come by then. I think I have a pretty good class this year, from what I can tell and based on what the 4th grade teachers have said when they looked at my roles. You may hear from me tomorrow night after my first day, but then again, I may be so exhausted that I go straight to bed.

MySpace.com

I signed up with myspace awhile back. Not sure why, but I think I saw someone’s link on their blog and decided to take a look. Of course, you have to sign up to see anything, so I did and wasn’t real impressed. I didn’t like the way it looked and frankly, I didn’t get the point of it! Time went on and I kept getting all these emails from people like, BimboTeen #1 or PornStarWannaBe asking me to ‘be their friend’. I was like, yah whatever! DENY! Then I saw all the publicity myspace was getting and it wasn’t good news at that! I continued to have all these bad thoughts about the site.

Then, while visiting my aunt, uncle, and cousins in Dallas, they were telling me how addicted my cousins were and how they are on it all the time. So curiousity got me and I started to check it out. I added them as ‘friends’ and they added me. Then, I saw the little link where you can put where you went to school. I found this quite intriguing, so I added my schools. Before long, I was doing a search of all the people that graduated my year. I was so excited to find lots of people I knew and starting adding them as ‘friends’. Then, I checked for other family members and added them too. I’ve since gotten in touch with lots of old high school friends and I’m up to 37 friends. So now I have a little more respect for myspace. It’s still a very scary place for children, especially if they’re not being supervised!
