My first day in Auburn (part III of the beginning)

Continued from Part II.

The first day I was in Auburn, Rob and I decided to walk to campus. We ended up over at the stadium, where it was open, because they were inside doing some cleaning. Rob talked me into going in, so we could go all the way up to the top to look out over campus. Needless to say, it was an awesome site to see. Jordan-Hare is much larger than Texas Tech’s stadium and it was a really beautiful view of campus.

After coming down, as we were walking to the gate where we came in, we found that the gate was closed…tight…locked!!! We walked all the way around looking for an opening and found nothing. No where to get out! Rob could actually squeeze through some of the gates, but with me, no such luck. We had to find a place that we thought we could climb over the 12 foot fence. At this point, I am not loving Rob too much. We found a place that didn’t have barbed-wire and discussed how I was going to get over this towering fence. Rob being quite athletic, not fearing the climb, could bound the fence in seconds. No problem. With me, I was frightened just looking at the lofty chain-link fence. I put one foot in his hands and the other in the fence and pulled with all my might over the top. I had to be careful not to scrape myself from the chain links that stuck up over the top of the fence. As I fell to the ground, I felt extreme pain. Looking down, I saw blood pouring from my hand and I knew from the pain in my inner thigh that I had not cleared the top of the fence. Rob still on the other side of the fence ascended over the fence in a matter of seconds. He tore his shirt off and wrapped it around my hand, as he knew I was losing a lot of blood quickly. Some nice college guys were driving by and must have seen what happened. They stopped and asked if we needed a ride. Since we had walked from our apartment, we were quite a ways from it at this point. We jumped in and had them take us home. We thanked them profusely and then jumped into our car.

I don’t remember getting to the hospital, but we got there. Never having gone to an emergency room before, I was intimidated and proceeded reluctantly. Since Rob shirt was covered in blood by the time we got there, they took us straight back. I ended up with 6 stitches in my hand. So not only was it my first day in Auburn, it was my first time to get stitches. Rob never expected our trip to campus to end up being so memorable. That night we stayed in as I was looped up on pain meds. He treated me to delivery from Dinero’s.

The beginning (Part II)

Continued from Part I.

So I was planning to visit Rob over spring break and I was moving to Auburn at the end of the semester. The catch was that my Grandparents, parents, and family knew nothing about this. Since they didn’t know I’d already been there once, I had to tell them that I was going there in March. I also had to wait until after I went so that I could say that I liked it there and have more to back up my plan.

I went and visited over Spring Break. I had a great time, confirming that what I was doing was right. I called my Grandparents to tell them that I was going to move to Auburn the day I was leaving. They seemed ok with it, but only because they didn’t believe I’d go through with it. In April, while home for Easter, I told them our plan for Rob to come and help me move. We’d then drive to Fort Worth, so that everyone could meet him and then we’d head to Auburn. At that point their hope that this really was going to happen was becoming more real. They said, “NO!!! Granddad will come move you back home and then Rob can come to our home to move you.” I remember being extremely upset and just came back with the typical young adult reply, “Whatever!!”

I called Rob to fill him in and told him that we would still do it the way we had planned, but instead of going to my Grandparent’s house, we’d go to my Granny’s house. I would just call them once I was in Alabama. In the mean time, I had called my Mom and Dad to let them know our plans. They were both completely behind me 100 PERCENT, which made me feel better!

So in May after taking all my finals and packing up all my stuff, Rob drove out to get me. We loaded up the car and headed to Fort Worth. We drove by my Grandparents house and waved. We got to my Granny’s house, where my Granny, Mom, sister, and brother waited anxiously to meet my new found love. I was so thankful when they approved and wished me the best. That evening we headed east. We stopped in Vicksburg, Mississippi to spend the night. The next morning we drove the rest of the way. After being in Auburn for a couple days, I still had not called my Grandparents to let them know. Rob made me call them, because he knew it was the right thing to do and we couldn’t wait any longer. It was dreadful. They were very mad and upset. 2 weeks later my Grandmother flew out to meet the guy that had ‘ripped their granddaughter from them’.

Grandmother liked Rob and approved, but still tried to convince me to come home.

Look for Part III later…

These are pics of Rob and I the weekend my Grandmother came to Auburn to meet him.

The beginning (Part I)

I’ve been under a great deal of ‘work’ stress, so I haven’t been writing much. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been thinking of things to write about. In fact, I found a great blog today, where JenMom does a beautiful job talking about her past. I had actually thought of lots of great things to write about that you don’t know about me, especially from my past. No I don’t have skeletons in my closet. It’s nothing like that.

That leads me to tell you about Rob and I. I’ve only mentioned briefly to you that we met on AOL. I was living in a dorm on the campus of Texas Tech University. I was in my sophomore year. I had had kind of a rough college life, from an awful break up in a 3 year relationship that had crumbled due to the long distance to not knowing that I could survive in the harsh, cut-throat major of medicine. I had been dating off and on after the big break up and had just changed my major, when I got that AOL disk in the mail in November 1995. I found it to be something that would take my mind off my troubles, never expecting it to take me where it has!

I remember loading AOL on to my laptop computer that I had received as a high school graduation gift. In complete disbelief that I was actually “chatting” with someone, I quickly became addicted to it. Innocently chatting with people, mostly guys. I talked with Rob for awhile. Maybe a week or two went by where we set up times to ‘meet’ online so we could ‘talk’. Soon after that we decided to call each other and talk. I remember loving the sound of his voice. One night we started talking around 9 p.m. and didn’t get off the phone until 3 or 4 a.m. Needless to say I didn’t make it to class that morning.

Christmas break was approaching quickly and I’d be heading home for about a month. I decided that I wanted to fly out and meet this amazing guy, so I made up a story that I needed to go back to campus early. My friends thought I was crazy. One of my friends even bought me some mase, which I didn’t even bring with me. So I flew from Lubbock, Texas to Atlanta, Georgia without anyone knowing except a couple of my friends! I think I stayed with ROb for 5 days. It was so surreal. I’d never been one to do something so crazy and risky. Rob was a really nice guy and we hit it off. I had been to Atlanta when I was 5, so Rob enjoyed showing me around. He even took me up to Helen, where it was snowing. It was place that I remember as extremely romantic. After that we headed to Auburn to see where he lived and went to school. Those 5 short days flew by and I didn’t want to leave.

The night I got home we started planning the next time I could go see him. I bought my plane tickets and had it set. In mid-January or so, I made a life changing decision. I was going to move to Auburn to be with him! But first, I had to apply to the university or this grand plan would be pointless. In February, I got the letter that I had been accepted! Our great scheme continued…more later!

This is pic that I took to send to Rob. It’s one of the first photos he saw of me.

Gosh I wanna write…I really do!

I’m just not sure what to write about. Thanks to all of those that have been praying for us. I still don’t wanna talk about why, but keep the good vibes coming our way;-)

Today was Drew’s pinewood derby. His car didn’t do too well. In fact his car JUMPED the track, which embarrassed him and there was no turning back after that! He cried and got seriously emotional over it. I tried to talk to him about it and say all the things a good mom would say. It’s so hard to see your child in a vulnerable situation like that. I wish I could shelter him from embarrassment and pain, but I know that’s not the right thing to do. Living through those situations now will make him a better person in the long run.

I’ll post a couple pics of the derby tomorrow.

Subject: Farts & Butts

Drew and I were headed to Hobby Lobby this evening to get stuff for his Pinewood Derby car. All of a sudden it wreaked of 9 year old gas!
Him: *sniff-sniff-sniff*, What’s that smell?
Me: *Chuckle, while rolling down the windows* You-woo farted. I’ll do what my dad used to do and we can play freeze out. Roll down on the windows when it’s freezing out. Gah! That stinks.
Him: *in a squatting position* I can’t help it. I got the farts.
Me: Squeeze your butt cheeks together when you fart. Helps it not smell so bad. That’s what I do.
Him: You fart?
Me: Oh, not anymore. Ever since I had you and Alex I don’t fart anymore. That’s why Moms don’t fart.
Him: Really?
Me: Really!
A few minutes later, we were listening to a CD and A Message in a Bottle came on.
Him: What’s this song say? Message in my Bottom? That’s doesn’t make any sense!
