13 Things: 2006 (TT #18)

Thirteen things…
I’ve been doing some “tidying” up of my blogosphere and realized that all my banners for Thursday 13 were because the original website is gone. So I went and fixed that. Then I found a link to a new Thursday 13 site and decided I might try to pick back up on this. This used to be one of my favorite posts to do each week.

Now thinking about what to write for my 13 this week. I’m going to list 13 things that have happened since my last Thursday 13 post, which was at the end of 2006!
1. Sold our 1st house and moved into a new house
2. Had career issues
3. Started my own business
4. Got a new computer
5. Been on lots of road trips
6. Been on 1 cruise
7. Cut my hair short
8. Did some remodeling to our new house
9. Quit blogging for awhile
10. Got a new car
11. Went to lots of concerts
12. Took tons of pictures
13. Taught myself how to use CS3 & CS4

Cruise Talk {7 Day Eastern Caribbean} Carnival Triumph

Edit: This post was previously posted for I Heart Face Vacation Edition. I’ve changed the title for my Travel Talk Posts.

ACK!!!! I had a really awesome post written for this and then poof it was gone. I’m not sure why it wasn’t auto saving. So this will be quite painful to try to recreate. Please ignore the typos etc. I don’t plan on rereading this now. I’ll do that later. Writing this twice has done me in! Ok, let’s see here….

Gotta Love Carnival's

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to travel and so does Rob. We love all forms of transportation from car, plane, ship, doesn’t really matter. I had a difficult time deciding which trip to write about because there are so many special trips to me. I think this idea has inspired me to go back and blog about trips way back when, but that’s for another day. I chose to write about Rob’s and my last cruise. I never did blog about it and it was such a special trip for me for many reasons. This was our 6th cruise. It was very different from the previous 5 because we didn’t feel pressured to do everything or stick to a serious schedule. We just did what we wanted to and enjoyed it. We stayed up late most nights dancing the night away or singing along in the piano bar. Most cruises we push ourselves so hard during the day and we’re usually so exhausted it’s nearly impossible to stay up late.

Another reason this cruise was different is that we left our house early Saturday, the day of departure, to drive to the airport to catch a plane to Miami. We’ve never done that before. We usually drive or fly down the night before and stay in a hotel near the port. We chose to do it the same day this time to save money on hotel and the flight was cheaper. Luckily everything went smoothly, no delayed flights or anything. We got to the port in good time and was in line to check in before they even opened the gates. We were on the ship before lunch which is always our goal. We do that so we can avoid long lines, eat a free lunch on board, start finding our way around the ship, take care of business, like buying our “Coke” cards for the trip, just to name a few.

Miami Art Deco

Miami Coastline

This was our first time to leave out of the Miami port, but my 2nd time in Miami, which I LOVE. I think it’s a beautiful city. The art deco is colorful and it’s such a trendy city. So I really enjoyed taking pics as we sailed away. Here’s Rob already enjoying a coke as we wave “Bon Voyage.”

Enjoying a Coke while we sail away

Carnival Tail Cup

Here’s Rob the morning of the 2nd day enjoying the drink of the day, the Yellowbird. This was our first full day on the ship and this day was a “Fun Day at Sea,”which means you stay on the ship while you get to your destination. You can do as much as or as little as you please. The activities director and staff on board all Carnival ships do an awesome job planning fun stuff from sun rise to way past midnight!

Castillo San Felipe del Morro

The 3rd day consisted of traveling until about 4 pm when we pulled into San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Port and disembarking about 5. This is our 2nd time to go to this port, so we decided to do something different. We took the Bacardi Tour, which was interesting and fun. From there we walked around San Juan and looked for a good place for dinner. We ended up at Tio Danny’s Cafe.

Bicardi

Visiting Pirates of the Caribbean; home of Blackbeard

Tuesday we enjoyed our port of call in St. Thomas. We started with breakfast at Bumpa’s. We visited Blackbeard’s castle. We ate lunch at The Greenhouse, where Rob had Swordfish sandwich and I had a Grouper Sandwich. Both were very good. Nice open and airy seating. We also took the Skyride up to Paradise Point. It was a bit hazy, but still such a beautiful view.

Does he look familiar? He should. It’s the statue of the pirate that was portrayed as Jack Sparrow in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean.

Here’s a cool picture I actually took from our cabin while we were leaving the port for another day at sea.

Here we are getting free drinks at the Past Guest Part-ay! Very happy people

At Dinner

Here we are after another Fun Day at Sea on the 2nd formal night at dinner.

Animal Towel
Can’t have a cruise without towel animals and chocolate each night.

Thursday we were supposed to go to Half Moon Cay – private island, but the currents were too dangerous for us to tender into the island, so that ended up being a day at sea. This was our first trip to have to change our itinerary.

Friday was our day in Nassau, Bahamas. The weather was yucky, but we got out anyway and walked around, shopped at the straw market, and checked email at an internet cafe.

Dancing on the Tables

The last night of the cruise the waiters and assistant waiters got on the tables and danced for us!

One more night at the disco, dancing it up!
Here’s our last night. We did not want the night to end, but we knew we had a long day ahead the next day.

One more pic with Ernie!

One thing I haven’t talked about was our Bar Waiter, who was the best ever! I could write an entire entry about Bar Waiters, in fact I might do that one day. Anyway, this is us with Ernie, who we came to love. He rocked!

Cruise ships at Night
This is one of my favorite shots, mainly because my night shots usually don’t turn out and I thought this one turned out great!

South Beach, Miami
This was from our last day after getting off the ship we had most of the day to site see before catching our flight back home.

Other stats of trip:
Ship: Carnival Triumph
Stateroom: 2316
Duration: 7 days – Saturday to Saturday
Itinerary: Eastern Caribbean

Adventures at the Doctor’s Office!

Today I took TV Boy to the dr. for a check up for boy scout camp that he’ll be attending in a couple weeks. We saw a new doctor, Dr. Matt Carter, who was super nice. TV Boy checked out great, but to my surprise he had to get 2 shots. No big deal or so we thought….

The nurses come in to give him the shots in his arm. Didn’t seem to phase him much so he hops up and we go to pay and leave. On our way out the door he mentions that he feels like he’s gonna throw up. I look over he’s pouring sweat and white as a ghost. I tell him we need to go in and sit down for a few minutes. However, he says no and continues to walk towards the car. He leans over like he’s gonna hurl. I took him by the arm and said we’re going inside. After letting go of him so I could open the door, he lays out on the ground. Without really thinking things through, I run in and tell the front desk people that he had just gotten shots and is not feeling good. They ask me something, but I’m thinking I really need to be out there with him and Monkey Boy who is running around since he’s not getting the attention. I try to grab MB’s arm, but he wants to play chase. All this while TV Boy is still sweating profusely and continues to lose color in his face that he doesn’t have! I manage to get TV Boy inside to sit down.

Fuming at this point, I go outside and have to chase my lovely 5 yo around. And as everyone from inside watch, I’m feeling like #1 Mom right now, looking pretty old cool! NOT. I manage to grab MB’s arm with the “you better behave before I lose it” kind of grip. After going inside I get in his face, I tell him that his brother is not feeling well and I need him to sit down and not to move. I got some wet paper towels and put them on TV Boy’s forehead. The nurses came out with a wheelchair and wheeled him back to the room. They had him lay down and a few minutes later come in to take his blood pressure and told him to lay down until he feels better.

Dr. Carter comes in, sits down, and talks with us for a few minutes. He shared with us that after military come back from being overseas, there’s a period of time military have to wait before giving blood. He got back from Iraq, waited until the time had passed, and decided to give blood. After the needle was inserted, he started to feel light-headed and his wife had to be called in to take him home. That would be something he would never live down. I just thought it was so nice of him to take that time to sit with us. Hopefully it didn’t put him too far behind, but they didn’t seem real busy.

TV Boy worked his way from laying, to sitting, to standing, and felt ok finally so we were able to head home. All is good now, but not without a little adventure at the doctor’s office!

Fix-It Friday: #16 Sweet Grin

Fix-It Friday: #16 Sweet Grin
Here’s my “fixed” version. Using CS4, I played with curves to help with the lighting issue. Then I unmasked the eyes and used the dodge tool to bring out the color. I then used an action called Glam Bur v.1 to help soften the picture. I cloned out some of the little red marks on his face.

Congrats to Maria!

Saturday my sis-in-law, Maria, graduated from SCAD Atlanta. It was a great commencement ceremony. Very inspiring! They had display screens and while we were waiting for the ceremony to start they displayed examples of work from a select few graduates. I’m a pretty artsy person and as they flipped through the different majors, there were several that I think would be awesome. Made me really wish I would have been exposed to more before deciding what to major in in college. Live and learn! Glenn Close gave the commencement speech, which was quite interesting. After the graduation, we headed over do Buckhead for dinner at Basil’s. It was a lovely night with family.

From there we headed up to north Alabama to visit a friend. I’ll post more about that later.

Fix-It Friday: #15 Little Precious
Here’s my “fixed” version. Using CS4, I played with curves to help with the exposure. Then, I unmasked the eyes and used the dodge tool. I increased the vibrance to bring out the color. I then used Lens Blur along with a dark vignette on the pic excluding her face. I cloned out some of the little red marks on her face.

WFMW {Bathtime Battles}

This is my first time time to do Works for Me Wednesday. This week’s topic is Parenting Tip for Young Children. When my boys were younger they loved taking a bath, but neither of them liked getting out when it was time. In fact it got so bad with my first son that I came to dread bath time every night. One night I told him he should try to “beat the water.” We put it to a tune, “Beat the Water! Beat the Water!” He ended up putting other words to it, but for the life of me I can’t remember what they were. This was silly, but it worked to get them out of the tub quickly and they both got so excited when they could be dried off before the water drained out of the tub. You can apply this idea to many daily struggles by just making it into a little game.

Moving On Up!

Last Day of 5th Grade

Yesterday was the end of an era. Drew finished his years at elementary school. It’s hard to imagine these 5 years have gone by so fast. I can honestly look back at those 5 years and be satisfied with the education he received. For the most part he liked all his teachers and so did we.

So now on to middle school for 6th & 7th grade. Then, junior high for 8th & 9th. In 6th grade they are in teams with 4 teachers. He’s on the Leopard team, so he’s been anxiously finding out from everyone what team they’re on.

Congrats to Drew!

Fix-It Friday: #14 Ponytail Princess

Fix-It Friday: #14 Ponytail Princess

Here’s my “fixed” version. Using CS4, I cropped the picture. Then I played with curves to help with the exposure. Then, I unmasked the eyes and used the dodge tool. I increased the vibrance to bring out the color. I uploaded into Picnik, where I went into Create and did the Effect called Orton-ish. I decided to use that effect because it made the colors a little brighter and softened the photograph. From there I went to Edit and did Rotate. Then, back under Create in Frames, I did Rounded Edges
