Library Story #1

LibraryStories

Not sure if I’ve talked about my temporary evening job I’ve had since November. If you follow me on Facebook, you’re well aware. Anyway, it has been a true blessing. It really helped us survive Christmas. Unfortunately it has finally come to an end, but I’ve made a few notes during this experience. I’ve learned so much and it has really been a fun job. So here goes…..

    Did you know that you can rent lap tops at the library?
    and
    Group study rooms?
    Extension cords and even power strips?
    There’s also DVD’s, Boxes of Rocks, and dry erase markers that you can rent out.

    And nearly all of these things listed above cause great heartache, disbelief, bad attitudes, rudeness, questions of why things are done the way they’re done, etc among the population of library-going students.

For those of you who have ever been on a cruise to Cozumel or Nassau you often wish you had one of these shirts?

Well, working at the library you often wish you had one THESE shirts!

I heard many interesting conversations. I wished I could have documented more of them. Here are a few conversations I overheard:

Some guy: (didn’t see him, just heard him talking on cell while I was at a back cubicle working): No, don’t text me. I’ll just find out the real way. I don’t want to find out if I made it from a text. I’ll text you after.

Girl sits on couch with laptop in lap: “Hi! I got an email saying I was in the top 20% of my class. I can be a part of this honor’s society group, but it’s a $75 application fee. Not sure if you think I should do that. Maybe you can research and see if it’s a scam or worth doing. That’s just lot of money when I may not even get in. Well gotta go, take my online quiz. Bye”

Guy standing in stairwell having what sounded like a very interesting conversation…”I’m not a GD socialistic…something or other…psychic…I don’t know what the future holds. We’ve effed up in the past and all we can do now is try. I can’t make any promises. All we can do is try and see what happens. Then, we won’t wonder what could have, should have, would have been…”

Situations observed while working at the circ desk:
Mat told a girl that was checking out a laptop that her computer was due back at 12:45 am. She happily replied with a huge smile on her face, “I’ll be 21 by then!”

Ok so this girl comes over to me and says she has a book question. She showed me the book while pointing down at the foreword by …. and prologue by…edited by….down at the bottom of the front cover. She wanted to know who the author was, but said, “Would it be who edited it or what???”

I’m looking……looking… And then I look up at the top to see the title and any other info it may say up at the top. It said “Shakespeare’s Hamlet.” I’m like (while trying not to BUST out laughing) “well the author would actually be (while pointing up the top) Shakespeare.”

With the look of mortification she said, “Please, please, pretend I didn’t just ask you that.”

I replied , “Oh, it’s no problem.”

The new fashion is girls in short running shorts with furry snow boots.

I guess this is a clue wear they’ve gotten this trend from:

A girl comes in with dry erase board, coffee, and Swedish fish.

Athletes I assisted:
Football
#91: Jake Ricks (jerk)
#92: Cameron Henderson
One other really sweet player not sure what his name or number was.

Golf
Karlin Beck
Cydney Clanton

Gymnastics
Leah Vining
Another gymnast, can’t remember her name.

Equestrian
Kristin Hansen

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2 guys started coming in during the 2nd semester and they always wanted a group study room. They always wanted to renew it and since there was a high demand for them we’re not allowed to renew them. The rule is they can turn it in for 15 minutes and if it was available after that time they could check it out again. I didn’t really do anything special. I don’t think. I guess the only thing I did was check out any other rooms first, so that if there was a room left when they came back it would be the one they were in.
On my last night, he asked if they were starting to get on my nerves and I said, “No. Even if you were getting on my nerves that today is my last day.”
He was like, “Whaaaaa??? No!!!!!” He was so sweet and said, as he was walking off that if I didn’t seem again to have a good one or something to that effect. During my last hour, I wasn’t sitting at the front desk, but he still made an effort to peak around the corner and say Good Bye! It gave me warm fuzzies, which is not something that happens much. Just another reason this job will be quite memorable.
I’m sure most of these anecdotes won’t mean much to you, but again, I’m just documenting my life.
Snow Day
We had a snow day on Friday. We made our way over to our neighbors across the street. They have a nice hill that the boys sled down on inner tubes. We probably ended up with 4-5 inches. Here’s some pics:
Party {eight 12 year olds}
I’ve had this post about half way done for awhile and am finally making myself finish. We did our traditional sleepover for Drew’s birthday. 8 boys came this year. They were really loud and rambunctious for the first few hours, but when it was time to ‘chill’ they did! They watched The Goonies and loved it!
Each year we notice a little differing conversations and focuses of the party. This year they were really into throwing the football, texting each other their cell phones, and (as I stick my fingers in my ears) talking about girls. I wished I had to videocamera out to record some of the things they said. Hilarious! I did manage to write down a couple things here:
W: I wish I was Freddie. [after Freddie kisses iCarly]
K: Same here!
[While watching some show where 30 year olds are crawling around on the floor]
W: This is just an excuse for grown men to act gay!
Since I’m friends with several of the parents on Facebook, I kept them updated with the latest party happenings. Here’s what I said:
— ready for the 12 year old sleep over. House chock-full of boys. Pray…please pray. šŸ™‚
— So far so good. Football in the front yard, food, now Wii….back from flashlight tag at the Cary Woods Fields. Now outside playing Snatch the Bacon.
— I would have never imagined 12 years ago that we’d have the capability of blasting party updates for all parents to read and all my other ‘friends’.
— watching movie and trying to get them to ((((((calm)))))))) down. So far it’s working…..
Rob said: — [party update] Lysha is fast asleep.
— party was great. Verdict: some kids slept some, some kids slept none, but they went home happy.
— Now….Drew has been sleeping since about 11. Have to wake him up soon so we can take him out.
Here’s pics from the party:
K-mart Conversation
So while at K-mart shopping for a birthday gift for a classmate of Alex’s…We’ve picked out the gift just had to get her a card since he insisted on it! Here’s the conversation that took place:
Alex: Mom, I gotta fart. Where can we go so I can do it?
Me: We’re almost done here, so just squeeze your butt cheeks together.
Alex: Mom, I don’t know how to do that.
Me: Just squeeze.
Alex: I can’t
Me: Ok, well then just let it go, no one is around.
Alex: But I don’t want anyone to hear it.
Me: No one’s around. Just do it so we can go.
[Long pause……..]
Alex: Mom, I gotta poop!
Me: {rolling eyes} Let’s go potty then!
After doing his business,
Alex: I just went ahead and farted while I was there, Mom.
Me: Good idea!
Living Positively & Happily
Yesterday’s sermon was over 2 of the 4 Biblical principles that our Preacher lives by daily. It was again another one of those sermons that I needed to hear. The 2 standards that he spoke of were:
1. Trusting in God.
2. Knowing that Happiness is a choice.
These are things that I try to keep in mind, but these last couple of years have been quite trying for me. I’ve almost felt like anytime I decided I was going to be happy, I couldn’t because I am “unemployed.”
I’m not able to:
— save for my kids’ college.
— go on big trips and cruises.
— do all the fix-ups to the house.
— etc!
And basically that due to the fact I have no job (or least not a full-time teaching job) my life is on hold. I think to myself, “Life is not supposed to be like this. This is not the way I pictured my life at all.” Then, I’m reminded of the sermon last week; what I picture my life to be may not be what God has planned for me. That is scary in so many ways. I know it shouldn’t be. I have to rely on God. I know deep down through all my layers of pain, guilt, bitterness (not towards God but towards situations), that He does have a plan and He will see it through.
Growing up, I worked very hard to keep a positive outlook on life. I had positive, uplifting sayings posted all over my room. I think even my first couple years of marriage I had positive statements on my bathroom mirror. I need to find the positive. I’m so bad about looking at the negative and dwelling on it. That seems to be human nature. People hover around at their job and flare up discussing the negative about their daily jobs, bosses, etc. People gossip about friends or situations, which only result in negativity. You turn on the news and they are harping on what this person did wrong or the murders that were committed. All negative. The more I think of it, this world buzzes on negativity.
I’m going to really work on these 2 principles myself. When I start to worry, I’m going to STOP and pray. When I start to think negative thoughts, I’m going to find the positive in life and be happy.
How do you keep yourself from getting in a rut of negativity and unhappiness?
Blog Award #2 This Week!
Rob’s cousin, Candi, gave me a blog award, Beautiful Blogger Award. šŸ™‚
Beautiful Blogger Award
I’m passing this award along to 3 very different bloggers:
1. The Flossip, who I’ve read for years on her previous blogs. She’s a great writer.
2. Southern Gal Goes North , who I’ve read for a couple years.
3. Vitafamiliae, who I’ve read for a little over a year. Her Dad is Rob’s boss.
When awarded you’re supposed to list 7 things about yourself. So, ummm…. let me think here….trying to think of things I’ve never said on here before.
1. Rob and I have made a commitment in 2010 to go to church and Sunday School every week.
2. We also just started a bible study; Growing Kids God Way
3. I am SO excited that 24 starts tomorrow!
4. I am trying to do a 365 day photo project over on flickr.
5. This is my 3rd year to attempt this, but I have such a hard time staying committed to it wanting to be more creative.
6. I didn’t think the “Pants on the Ground” song was so funny. We watched it on DVR a couple nights after reading and hearing all the hype and I just didn’t get it.
7. Love the satisfaction of a clean house.
Friendship Blog Award
I was awarded this Friendship Award by Fun Mama, who was a very good friend of my husband’s in high school. We met at one of his high school reunions last year and have been falling each other ever since.
I’d like to give this award to Candi, who is Rob’s cousin. We have several things in common one of which is our photography addiction :), husbands who are sports fanatics, and we enjoy traveling.
