Cruise Talk {4 Day Western Caribbean} Carnival Sensation

Writing my last post about cruising definitely got me anxious to write about our 2nd cruise. Although, there wasn’t a whole lot of writing to do, since Rob had written most of that up after we got back. As for this post, I’ll be writing all this from memory using the assistance of the Carnival Capers [I saved], my pictures, and the internet to help me remember some of the details.

Anyway, we went on our 2nd cruise in November 2002 with Rob’s Mom and Step Dad, Alice and David. It was their first cruise. We enjoyed showing them the “cruising ropes” and they fell in love with it also. We left out of Tampa again. We squeezed in a 4 day cruise over Columbus Day weekend.

Sensation Cruise 2002

I plan to write about the ins & outs of cruising, but I do wanna go ahead and mention that we highly recommend that you get on the ship in time for lunch. Why not go ahead and have free food? We usually get to the port about 11 or 12 and just depending on the cruise line, they allow you to get on the ship around 12 or 1. You just can’t go to your cabin at that time, so we have a backpack or 2 with us with everything we need for that afternoon and possibly evening. More about that in my Cruising Ins & Outs post.
After dinner, we were entertained at the Welcome Aboard Show hosted by our cruise director, Lenny Halliday, and comedy with Carl Faulkenberry in the Fantasia Lounge.

Day 2 – Friday: November 8, 2002
Fun Day at Sea

The 2nd day was a Fun Day at Sea, we spent much of the day doing on board activities and eating, along with relaxing poolside. That evening, Captain Giulio Basso hosted a Cocktail Party with music and free cocktails. This was also our formal dinner night which meant lobster, which completely excites Rob and David. After stuffing ourselves at dinner, we were inspired by the show; Party Time starring the Sensation Dancers. Thereafter, as if we didn’t get full enough at dinner, we feasted upon the Gala Buffet at midnight.

Day 3 – Saturday: November 9, 2002
Cozumel, Mexico

The Sensation in Cozumel

We arrived in Cozumel around 8 am and departed at 12 am. After eating breakfast on the ship, we disembarked and headed to our planned excursion, which was the Sub-Ocean View Boat ride. Boat seen here.
Sensation Cruise 2002

This excursion is good for people of all ages. You step down into a boat where you sit comfortably and look out. This is the easiest way to see corral, fish, and underwater ruins without having to get wet!

After that excursion we were free as we had chosen to try and find something to do on our own. We ended up renting a car and headed out to first, find a place to eat. This was accomplished after driving up and down a few blocks. We ended up at El Morrito II.

El Morrito II
This was a great choice, because we wanted some authentic mexican without spending an arm and leg. Our next goal was to find a free or at least really cheap beach to hang out for much of the day. The first place we stopped at was a state park and they were going to charge us some crazy amount, so we kept driving. We ended up at Mr. Sanchos Beach. This ended up being an awesome find! It was free and there was no time limit.

You do have to walk through some vendors at the front, but we got there early enough in the day, they weren’t completely ready to harass us.

Mr. Sanchos Beach
They have a bar and restaurant, which was wonderful! We just had a tab running while we were there. I wouldn’t consider it to be cheap, but thought it wasn’t outrageously priced either, especially since you don’t have to pay to be there, use chairs, tables, or the little wading pool.

After enjoying our time in the sun and sand, we jumped back in the jeep and decided to take a ride around to the “Other Side” of the island. The east (windward) side of the island is the opposite side from where the cruise ships dock. This would be considered the surfing and kite flying side of the island with very dangerous swimming conditions. We ended up at a little bar/restaurant, which I think now is called Coconut’s. Click here for a simple interactive map of the island.

Day 4 – Sunday: November 10, 2002
Fun Day at Sea

Sunday was a fun day a sea. Many laughs at the Newlywed/Not-So-Newlywed Game, hopeful games of bingo, and some sports Trivia. The show was Hey Mambo with very bright, neon colors.

Spring is…

really teasing us. After one of the coldest winters we’ve had, we are SO ready for spring.

spring

I took these pictures last weekend while we were in Baton Rouge visiting family. Candi has this beautiful tree in her yard. I’d like to add some of these to our yard someday.

Cruise Talk {5 Day Western Caribbean::Jubilee}

Lately I’ve been really thinking about travel and how happy that Rob and I have had such great opportunities to travel quite a bit in the last nearly 13 years of marriage! I’ll admit I’m in need of a get away, pretty badly, but with the absence of half of our income, that’s just not possible right now. So, I’ve decided to do a little series (as I find time) on our past travels that occurred before I started blogging. I actually have all our travels archived on our family website, but I think I’m the only person that ever looks at that. It’s always good to have it on here, too. I’m going to start with our first cruise.

Learning to Ride

The weekend before Alex turned 6 he decided he was going to learn to ride his bike. I was so proud that he and his big brother were outside working on it. In 2 days he pretty much had it down. Over spring break we went to Town Creek park. They have bike paths that go through the park. We also went over to the school, where they have a nice big parking lot so that he could ride and practice his turns.

Spring Break 2010

This spring break we just hung out. When it wasn’t raining, the boys and I went outside to ride bikes and play.

Spring Break 2010

The 2nd weekend of SB we went to Baton Rouge to visit family. We always look forward to Cajun food when we head over that way. We went to Chimes on Sunday after church. It was so yummy! Rob had Red Beans & Rice and Crawfish Etouffe. We had Boudin Balls and onion rings for appetizers. SO yummy! I had the Catfish platter, which came with Red Beans & Rice and Hush Puppies.

Although these beautiful flowers had bloomed and were a sure sign of spring in Baton Rouge, the weather while we were there surely didn’t reflect it. It was very cold, windy, and rainy.

Another purpose of our trip was to meet Rob’s Dad, so that we could get this car. Since Rob’s Honda Accord is dying, we’ve looked and looked for another great deal like we found with that car. We found that Cash for Clunkers depleted the area of any “good deals.” Rob’s Dad had been looking to get rid of this Accura Legend, so we were happy to take it off his hands.
Spring Break 2010

On Monday, we had a military funeral to attend in Mississippi. Rob’s Step Dad’s Dad passed away in December. It took some time for them to figure out which military cemetery he was going to be buried at. I took lots of pictures of the ceremony, which I’ll post later. I had never been to a military funeral before, but it is something everyone should see. Very touching

The Little Girl in Me

For some reason, Rob gets an American Girl catalog. Oh, I just get all giddy looking through it. It’s a good thing they weren’t around when I was little. I’m not sure I would have had a collection of them like I did with Cabbage Patch dolls, but I sure would have like to have! I know CP dolls seemed to be quite expensive back in the day, but I know they weren’t $100.

Anyway…

The other day as I was looking through the American Girl catalogue, I found myself looking through it as if I were going to be placing an order. Circling my top choices and then narrowing it down to what my final purchase would be. I thought about having a little girl and what fun it would be to sit down with her and pick out what she would like. I know that would get pricey and my wallet is thankful that we were blessed with boys.

My wish list:

Just Like You doll: Light skin with freckles, short red hair, green eyes

Lanie, which is the 2010 doll, is precious. I know I would have a hard time resisting adding her to my collection as well.

I love that each doll comes with her own book.

Dressing like your doll is just the cutest idea. I had a couple outfits growing up that matched my CP dolls. It was so fun. These are just irresistable.

In the historical doll collection, Molly and those braids just have me head over heels. So cute!

When funds are low, it’s fun to “catalog” or “window” shop. Maybe someday when life returns to normal financially, the little girl in me can be treated to an American Girl doll. What does the child in you want?

Conversation {Tails}

This little conversation came after Alex asked me if it was cold outside.
Alex: Rosie must get cold. She doesn’t have a tail.
Me: That’s right.
Alex: Don’t most animals have tails?
Me: Yah
Alex: Are there any humans that have a tail?
Me: No, we don’t have a need for a tail like animals do.
Alex: That’s why we get cold easier than animals.

Six…

How can it be? I just swoon when I see this pic of my little guy. How I miss the tiny-ness of holding a newborn.

There’s nothing holding a little piece of you.
Someone you created…

Someone; a baby that grew inside of you.

Pregnant

Someone that relies on you 100%…

Food Rules

My last week at the library I saw this book, flipped through it, and decided to check it out. I loved that it was short, sweet, and to the point. It outlines 63 rules about food. A lot of it is common sense, but I think for a lot of us we have lost our common sense when it comes to food. Anyone else agree with me there? I know deep down, I know what’s good and not good, but when I’m “on the go”, I just throw all that out the window. And I drive up to the window! LOL

So here are some key points I found intriguing while reading this book and I highly recommend you read this book for yourself.
— Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food. For example: Go-Gurt
— Avoid food products containing ingredients that no ordinary homan would keep in their pantry. For example: Cellulose? Xanthan gum?
— Avoid food products containing ingredients that a 3rd grader cannot pronounce. Just look at some food labels in your pantry. See how many ingredients you find that fit that rule. Would love to hear some examples.
— Avoid food products that contain high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
— Avoid foods that have some form of sugar (or sweetner) listed among the top three ingredients. BTW, sugar is sugar even if it is organic.
— Avoid food products that make health claims. Even Cheerios? It’s supposed to help with Cholesterol…anyone know if that’s true?
— Avoid foods you see advertised on television. That would include fast food.
— Shop the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle. I knew this one, but always good to remember when you’re there.
— Eat only foods that will eventually rot!
— It’s not food if it arrived through a window of your car. 🙁
— It’s not food if it’s called by the same name in every language. For example: Big Mac, Pringles
— Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk. Never seen this happen until recently when I got a different kind of cereal for the boys. Eee-yew!
— “The whiter the bread, the sooner you’ll be dead.”
— Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself. Ha! They don’t know that when I go to the trouble to make to bake, I bake enough to feed the neighborhood. 🙂
— “Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper.”
— Don’t get your fuel from the same place your car does. This one isn’t too bad for me, except sometimes when we’re on trips and we get a “snack” at the gas station.
— Do all your eating at the table. This is a difficult one, especially for people who have a hard enough time finding time to eat! Eating in the car, in front of the TV, running around the house while trying to get out of the house, etc.
— Treat treats as treats. Follow the S-policy: no snacks, sweets, or seconds except on days that begin with the letter “S”.
