114/365.2011 {Happy Easter}

easter

I had originally taken the picture because I saw the commercial where the picture from below came from and thought how could I do something silly with Daisy. I remembered I had these bunny ears. Unfortunately, the pic above did end up on Facebook, but I know it brought lots of smiles.

112/365.2011 {Really?}

Someone actually put this on their car's back window!

As I was running errands today, I saw this on the back of someone’s car. I don’t understand people sometimes. Seriously? You put this on the window of your car? Really? You’re proud of this?

I could SO get on a soapbox about this, but I’ll spare you for the most part. I do have to say though, that after 9 years in the classroom, this is the mentality of more people than not. Too many parents are teaching their children that if they “yell loud enough”, you can get what you want. Forget hard work, dedication, setting of goals, taking pride in yourself and your actions… They expect something for nothing. It really is sad.

111/365.2011 {Give Blood}

111/365.2011 {Give Blood}

Today I was able to mark off another of my goals in my 101 in 1001 list! It was also a very important one. Today I gave blood for the 1st time. Here’s the run down of the time frame for giving blood and sense it was my 1st doing it, I was extra cautious to make sure I did what they recommended before hand!

9:30 Started drinking my water 16 oz.
11:00 Ate lunch
11:25 Headed over to Campus
11:35 Walked to the Student Union
11:45 Signed in
11:50 Read the informational binder
12:00 Got called back to:
Take temperature
Take blood pressure
Take pulse
Answer questions (via computer)
12:20 Got comfy in my donor chair
Got some apple juice
Watched the nurse label on the tubes and bags
Nurse rinsed the spot on my arm with iodine for 30 seconds
Needle is inserted and blood is drawn for about 10 minutes
12:40 Bag was full. Remaining blood in tube was emptied in to about 6 test tubes. Got my arm cleaned off and very tightly bandaged up.
12:45 Got my snack and T-shirt and headed home!

It wasn’t bad at all. I started getting just a bit light-headed near the end, but the nurses do a great job of making sure you have juice and are feeling ok. It truly is an amazing feeling to know that just a small act can help save up to 3 lives!

And baby makes three…(part V)

I started writing this series several years ago and never finished this one…
If you missed the first 4 posts, here’s links to them:

Part I      Part II       Part III       Part IV

Well, I was trying to think what came after the wedding and well it was pretty much baby! I found out I was pregnant at 5 months!! I was on the bcpill and just had no idea until I started feeling movement and my tummy was getting big and hard. Yes, it was quite scary. Twenty-two, newly married, in college, and pregnant! It definitely could have been worse. I do realize that, but calling the family to let them know that we were expecting was pretty nerve-racking. Everyone approved and it’s not like anything was going to change, if they didn’t. My grandparents were in disbelief and I only know that because they said they weren’t going to tell anyone. I’m like well, if you don’t hurry up, I’ll have the baby and they won’t know. Others were upset, but even though they didn’t vocalize it. I could hear the disappointment in my mom’s voice. Later I found out that she didn’t think I’d go back to college after taking off a quarter to have the baby. I also heard later that family friends told my Grandparents, I would end up being an uneducated, stay-at-home barefooted and pregnant mom! That just fueled my desire to go back to school and finish.

As for labor, it was pretty much textbook.

  • 14 hours
  • tried to go natural
  • said forget that
  • did the epidural
  • thank goodness
  • dr. had to break my water
  • pushed an hour
  • needed assistance
  • dr. used vaccum
  • baby had major conehead
  • happy to see it was a boy (we didn’t know, because they couldn’t determine during the ultrasound)

What wasn’t textbook, was that he was 8 lbs. 14 oz.! We were quite shocked. Other than that we couldn’t get him to breastfeed, so much to my dismay we had to stay in the hospital an extra day. He had just lost too much weight and they wanted to make sure he could start gaining weight and that he was going to continue eating. Things I wish someone had told me is that breastfeeding does not come naturally. It takes hard work, persistence, and staunch support from your husband.

Grandmother's 1st Great Grandbaby

Baby A Just Got Home!

My Grandmother and Rob’s mother were at our house the first night we came home. It was a good thing, because after coming home, it was pure hell. TV Boy wouldn’t latch and acted like he could have cared less. As if I wasn’t already a ball of emotions after giving birth and staying at the hospital longer than expected, now I had to worry that when we went in for our weigh-in that he would have lost weight and he’d have to go back into the hospital. I remember making a dreaded phone call to the hospital nursery the first night at home to try and get some support. I took their advice, which was to be in a dimly lit room with just me and the baby and relax. It was amazing. It was almost as if he was a different newborn.

After about 2 months, it was time to go back to school for the spring quarter. TV Boy slept through the night preceding my first day back. It was such a gift. Since TV Boy was such a good baby it was easy for me to get my work done and I remember feeding him while reading my assignments out loud to him. I’m sure he enjoyed hearing all about Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Educational Issues! Never too young to start reading to your baby regardless of how complicated or boring it is, right?

110/365.2011 {Little Bits of Happiness}

IMG_8406.JPG

I used to have plants. One of the things that made me feel “grown up” when I moved out on my own was to have plants and candles. LOL! That sounds so trivial, but it’s usually little things in life that make me happy. I also think it’s because growing up, we didn’t really have live plants in the house and we sure didn’t have candles.

Not long after living in an apartment, I started with a couple baby plants like these. I was amazed how these things grew and how healthy I was able to keep them. Not really sure what happened to them. Actually, I think when we moved they all got put outside and by the time, I remembered to bring them in they were nearly dead. 🙁 From there life has just made me unmotivated to keep up with anything other than me and my family, so I suppose that’s why I’ve forgone replacing them.

Not sure what made me decide to try it again. Maybe I’m seeking the satisfaction of seeing something grow and stay healthy and of course, the health benefits of having live plants. (Well, I put it on my list of 101 things to do in 1001 days!) Curious, what little things in life make you happy?

108/365.2011 {Camping}

Here’s a couple pics from Saturday and Sunday when we went camping.

camping

Our weekend started with Monkey’s baseball game in Auburn at 9:30 am. We booked it out of there, back home to finish packing for our camping/soccer trip up in Birmingham. We had to have Teenager on the field at 1:00. We made it with no issues and even had time to run through a drive-thru. After Teenager’s victorious soccer game, we followed the Farrows to Oak Mountain State Park. Praying that they had a place for us tent camp, we were shocked to find out there was only RV camping areas, but since it was after 4:00 we took it. We got camp set up and then headed to dinner. Ben suggested Dale’s Grill that was good Southern cooking. We made sure to save room for s’mores later on in the evening. We made a quick stop at Wal-Mart and then back to camp to get the fire going. Our 2 Boy Scouts got the fire going in no time. The temperature was dropping slowly but surely, so we all gathered around and began roasting our marshmallows for the smores. We also made hot cocoa. After that we hurried to our tents to get some shut-eye before the rest of the campers around us returned from the nearby concert.

Sunday morning the temperature dropped near the high 30’s, so we were happy to find Rob had gotten a fire going.

More hot chocolate was enjoyed.

Camp was torn down and packed up.

Off to Waffle House so our 2 soccer players could “carb up”! The 1st game started at 10, where we, unfortunately, came out with a loss. We ate lunch at Baumhower’s. We wasted time by letting the kids run around at the Sonic playground, where it ended up getting pretty warm with the sun, so we diverted over to the McDonald’s down the street. Then, at 3:30 we headed back to the fields for the last game of the weekend! Exhausted at this point, we were just glad to get it over and head home! We stopped at Popeyes for some chicken and red beans & rice.

Although tiring, the weekend was a great one! We enjoyed hanging out with 4 out of the 6 Farrows!
