I don’t know what is going on this season with Auburn football! We’re having a shameful season and it’s just sickening. 2 years after being on top of the world after winning the National Championship, we find ourselves 1-6 with not much of hope of bettering that any. My heart aches for those players who put their dreams on the line to join a university for which many of them have loved since they were little boys. I’m not going to lament over this and question what is going on with the football program, but what I would like to do is explain something…
Auburn fans don’t love Auburn because of a sport or because of a legendary coach or player. The Auburn family loves Auburn because Auburn lives in our hearts, whether we win or lose. Fans from other schools can’t understand why we are truly rooted in our traditions, why we’d care so much about 2 trees that stand on a corner, why when we’re 1,000’s of miles from home we greet each other with a friendly “War Eagle!”, or why we still hold true to all that it is to be an Auburn fan when we lose to Alabama or have a deplorable season. George Petrie couldn’t have concluded Auburn Creed’s any better when he wrote, “And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it.”
